i dindt see and project section on this site so i figured this would fit best here, feel free to place it in a more appropriate section if needed.

this thread is on many onther forums so i just copied and pasted...

just picked up a 99 gmc sierra 1500 for $2800 today was a hell of an ebay find

its a 4.8 v8 4wd auto with 104,000 miles runs and drives. from the doors back it is mint, the front end and the frame ehh it needs some work lol.. airbags are blown and frame is bent, motor got pushed up into the firewall and such.

anyways my plans are to fix it and to make it the new daily/tow pig. Im gonna try to pull the frame back to spec, or throw a new frame clip on it or a used frame.. whatever works best... and since the front sheetmetal clip is ****ed a new clip will be in order, not sure which one... lol

on its way to my work.....

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/phatfarmer2/sierra/0910072045.jpg

Good find. I was driving today, and was about 10 feet away from a wreck where a guy in a nbs doing about 40 slammed into the back of another truck. Effed his front end up about like yours.

I bought a totaled dakota that was hit in the back pretty hard, and just bought a flood truck with perfect body panels I'm swapping over to the wreck truck.

That's a nice find, is it a LB? Are you gonna re-use the 4.8, or is a 5.3/6.0 swap in order? It looks relatively stripped down, luckily it doesn't have the 4.3, no power windows, possibly no power locks, floor 4wd shifter etc. Is the front of the 4wd system all effed up, are you just gonna convert it to 2wd? Lots of questions, but good luck with all of it. Also, for a clip, an 06-07 clip would kick ass.

long bed yes. gonan keep the 4.8. i want to convert the interior to all power and leather. frotn 4wd is all fine. it might need a control arm, not sure untill i do an alignment, but i am going to keep it 4wd since i need it for the winter aroudn here, i tried a 2wd last winter in the snow and it was hell... i would really like to do an 06 clip but i dont wanna spend a rediculous amoutn of money on the whole truck.

BTW if you kwo anyone selling any parts that will help me out let me know! thanks!

Looks like it can be a real nice truck. Where in NJ are ya located?

You better do some measuring on that Tahoe frame, right in front of the front body mount they are different. The tahoe frames narrows at a different spot than the truck frame does. 92-99 they were the same, but the 00-06 are a little different.

And the sheet metal for an 03-06 shouldn't be that much more expensive for what you are getting out of it.

front clip prepped to side inbetween the original rails just liek the factory..

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/phatfarmer2/sierra/0929071228.jpg

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/phatfarmer2/sierra/0929071229.jpg

i straightend the frame just where it needed to be, i didnt even **** with anything about a foot and a half away from the front cab mount. i removed the majority of the suspension, but left the rack, front axle, and sway bar there...

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/phatfarmer2/sierra/0929071229.jpg

once i got the part of the frame good and straight, i hacked that bent to hell front clip off...
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/phatfarmer2/sierra/0929071339.jpg

with an engine hoist i slid the new front clip right in to the frame rails... i thank GM for there frame buildign techinques... they built all there front frame clips all the same, so all i had to do was do a few cuts of the old clip and the new clip slides right into the boxed frame section.. wored out great...

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/phatfarmer2/sierra/0929071659.jpg

welded in exactly as if it were factory.
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/phatfarmer2/sierra/0929071700.jpg

then hit it up with some undercoat.. looks completly factory in person... hard to tell in the pics... however i did add one 1.5 inch plug weld to the out side of rail, just for some extra strength

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/phatfarmer2/sierra/0929071829.jpg

tommorow i need to throw some of the suspension on it so that the frame can be made mobile.. and its my nieces birthday so i wont be doing a whole lot at all, maily just a few hours cleanign up, and making it mobile... so yeah keep an eye out for more progress...

phatfarmer2
09-30-2007, 10:54 AM
clean up the shop, got the whole front suspension in.. only thing i didnt get in was the brake lines (need new ones anyways) shocks, calipers, and sway bar...

so its once again a rolling chassis, thats straight not bent to hell.. lol

tag for a fellow s10forum member. Nice to see this making such quick progress. I spent part of my day at the shop and the gym. Although my friend drove is truck for the 1st time in 9 months today, so it was worth it, even with him dropping a 1/2 rachet to me...from the bed...I was under the truck...landed on my kneecap...damn...

Ah.. I see the trailing arm mounts now. Was the trans crossmember the normal flat type or a boxed tube type?

phatfarmer2
10-07-2007, 06:46 PM
i dunno.. lol i only needed the front clip where factory did the frame splicing so i forget what the tahoe frame looked like.

however i remember the trans crossmember looked nothing alike

and on the tahoe frame just a few inches or so more ahead of the factory frame splice the frame get about 2-3 inches wider..

this is really the only way i can afford new vehicle, is to buy them wrecked and fix them.. sure i could shell out $7,000+ cash for a truck, but i really cant see spending more then $3,000 for any vehicle... call me cheap, but im saving money for when i open up a shop.. so saving as much money as i can, while spending a lil cash to satisfy a few of the things i really want.. lol

Your truck has really turned around fast and that pan floor in the Blazer is just fuggin amazing!! Now that is how a body dropped floor board should look like if you have the time & skills which obviously you do!

since i converted to a double din, 99-02 models dont have the option for it, but an 03+ radio bracket swaps in, however you need an 03+ dash bezel, but the 99-02 hvac controls dont fit the 03 bezel..... so this is my solution..

03+ bezel with part of the 99-02 part for the hvac control... should look factory when done...

I absolutely love rebuilding wrecks.....It makes car shopping so much easier . You get to pick colors , options, and the price is usually way less than a base model would be.

You can use the 03 bezel, you just make a quick drop bracket for the AC controls. Thats what I did in mine with an 03+ escalade bezel. And then i just used the 03+ radio bucket so i didnt need to cut much.

nice!

i just realized soming when looking at the pic of the truck from the back with the '04-'07classic tail lights, that the gmc never had that option for tail lights in those years. i work at a dealer and i have been noticing that '05, and '06 gmc trucks all have the tail lights that came from 99-'03 on the chevy. i can't see every one with an '04 - '07 classic gmc switching them back to the other style. i keep wondering why the gmc was never offered with this style tail light.

and i did notice yours was 99, its just i have never seen those tail lights on a gmc, and since gmc never changed the headlight style like chevy did in '03.
