View Full Version : reprogrammers vs custom tunes? Shamrock84 09-21-2007, 09:17 PM hey i have a 01 tahoe with a afe stage 2 intake, i will be getting a cat back, and i was wondering why a custom tune would be better than i hypertec programmer. thanks for the help jfman 12-25-2007, 08:08 AM bump for you ArrivalSS 12-28-2007, 08:22 AM There is only so much that can be done with a hand held unit. A custom tune can change everything. You can tune for certain mods, chnge shift points to where YOU want them, change timing and AFR to where it should be, wct. It's a difference of night and day. Some others on here can give more info about it than me, but use someone reputable. You can do some serious damage if you don't truely know what you're doing. Most custom tuners offer lifetime retunes if you add a mod. sk1er18 12-28-2007, 08:35 AM i haven't heard many people rave about the hypertech. i have the diablosport predator and couldnt be happier. Running the 1/4 mile at Atco the generic 87 octane performance tune on the predator changed my run from 17.4 seconds to 16.6 seconds and i spun the tires on the 16.6 second run (couldnt break the tires loose without the tune). a lot of people swear by custom tunes.... but custom tune or not, almost 1 full second better in the 1/4 mile is hard to beat. Therefore the predator is hard to beat imo; its $320 shipped, works as a code reader for all GM trucks, modify parameters in minutes, return to stock in minutes, awesome tech support forum, data acquisition, can download custom tunes (same as any custom tunes you'll mail order, if not better), etc, etc :read: edit: and this handheld can change 'ALL' parameters; AFR, Shift points, fuel curve, timing, etc.. achidotcom 12-29-2007, 10:33 AM i have owned a hypertech, F.A.S.T. and now have EFIlive. hypertech had little to no power difference (in feel) fast had a little improvement, nice when i cammed up my 5.7. and efi live has a huge increase in seat of the pants power. tuned by justin at blackbear. i purchased the efilive from justin and he gave me a free tune. i am very happy with the efi live. justin 01-10-2008, 10:11 PM edit: and this handheld can change 'ALL' parameters; AFR, Shift points, fuel curve, timing, etc.. That's not quite true though. Yes, the diablo does typically set a truck up with a better tune than most other handhelds, but it still will not go anywhere near the level of complexity of a custom tune. Where you're adjusting a "fuel curve" by x%, where is that fuel being changed? Is it in the VE table (which has a few hundred data points), the MAF calibration (another 80+ data points) or is it in PE mode? Same with timing. The primary timing table(s) (High and low octane) have over 500 data points each, and increasing the entire table by x degrees isn't ideal. EFILive is free to download and there are a few tunes that come with it to inspect. Check it out and see just how much there is that can be changed on a typical Gen-III truck. http://www.efilive.com/download.aspx. achidotcom 01-11-2008, 11:36 PM thanks justin for clearing that up. i could not put it in experienced words. motogoat20 01-18-2008, 11:50 AM i hav a 06 chevy 1500 rcsw with the 4.8, 5 speed, 3.73 limited slip. its gona be a fun truck! im not gona go too crazy with it, just bolt ons probly, i have a k&n intake and flowmaster on it so far, it realy lacks torque right now and i want the most gain out of the reprogram as possible but is it over kill for me to buy a custom tune system? i would not be opposed to getting it custom tuned by someone else but how do i know if they know what they are doin if i dont know what im doin either! achidotcom 01-18-2008, 09:33 PM yes justin at blackbear can do a tune that will give you some low end. take out tm and change shift points, justin does it a little different than most tuners, he'll take your stock program , beef it up than let you drive it than you send the tune back by email and he crosses all the tee's and dot's all the iii's, just to make shure that you get the most power for your driving style and climate. i am about two months into my tune and i am really happy with it. best money (other than corvette servo) that i ever spent., just pm justin and he'll answer fast.......... motogoat20 01-19-2008, 02:38 PM yes justin at blackbear can do a tune that will give you some low end. take out tm and change shift points, justin does it a little different than most tuners, he'll take your stock program , beef it up than let you drive it than you send the tune back by email and he crosses all the tee's and dot's all the iii's, just to make shure that you get the most power for your driving style and climate. i am about two months into my tune and i am really happy with it. best money (other than corvette servo) that i ever spent., just pm justin and he'll answer fast.......... sweet! thanks for the info 85frdfandc 01-27-2008, 06:55 PM Which one is the demo download?
