View Full Version : Is Craftsman for real?

Is Sears for real with this tool box? Neon Underglow, Ipod holder, 12volt power outlet, LCD clock with timer and temp, pull out lighting to help us find tools. This is as bad as the LED on the jack pad. I saw it the other day as I was walking through Sears. I can see the built-in clock and power outlets, but neon and timer and temp, please. As for the pull out lighting to find tools, the drawers are so small, how can you lose anything in there.

I think Sears is getting way too far into the "tool collector" thing - like an engraved, unobtainum plated ratchet in a fitted walnut case with an engraved brass plaque that says "Special Edition." I think there are a subspecies of people out there who buy tools but never use 'em. Sounds perverted to me, but what the hell, everybody gets to spend their money their own way.

To get back on topic: "Sorry, boss. I couldn't make flat rate on that brake job because my tool box had dead batteries."

I crack myself up.

Yes, but the SO boxes are about paint and are still a SO toolbox. This is just gimmick $@^% added on to charge more. Craftsman, are you listening, drop the gimmick stuff and build in quality. Yes, I have owned Craftsman boxes and as long as they sit in a corner and don't move, there great. Just don't try to move them when there loaded with tools.

Just my opinion. Kind of like a presentation grade shotgun with engraving and inlay. A work of art, yes, but you wouldn't want to take it out in the brush on a drizzly wet day because it's too nice. I'm a functionality type of guy - a wrench is for wrenching and a shotgun is for shooting some quail.

Quail - broiled with a strip of bacon. Yum. Look out for the shot.

I kinda like it, very convienent with the 12 cig. lighter, pull out drawer, 120v on it. I think its sears way of keeping up with the times seeing as almost everyones got a ipod or expensive ass phone thats gonna need recharging. Put your radio on top, battery charger for you cordless impact gun on there too! One plug to plug in and your done, roll where ever you gotta go. Would i buy it, hell no, but i would take it for FREE!!!!!

Exactly. Why have it if you can't use it? I'm all for owning nice stuff. If you're gonna buy it, take care of it, but enjoy it!

If someone gave me that tool box I think I would return it & get a bigger one for the same price.

All the useless gimmicks & gadgets out there kind of annoy me, but more power to them if they are selling & making money. The Apple I-phone is a perfect example of neat tricks, but it doesn't do anything useful that some other phones don't already do better.

Uhh on second thought.....no.

If I needed a clock, I have one on the wall. If I wanted to listen to some music, I'll turn on that strange machine called an AM/FM radio. If I wanted to know the temperature outside, I walk/look outside. I could go on but I won't. "Soft-touch over-molded side handles make handling and moving easier." What?! Heaven forbid you get a cut on your hands or work too hard. Now I can appreciate the R&D put into this...."tool chest", but I won't buy one. My "standard" tool box works just fine. I can find several other things to spend $1k on. [/rant]
But like Joe said "To each their own."

I went and looked at it today, and I must eat my words because it's a VERY nice toolbox. The drawers are the quietest, strongest, smoothest Crafstman drawers I've ever opened, the whole thing is laid out very nicely, it's extremely well built, and that overhead light is actually very nice. I would consider one without the neon underglow and in black. I could get used to the temp. and clock. It's definitely not a piece of crap.

12-03-2007, 01:26 AM
...aznricerboi anyone? Now you can store your tools that you used to pull off your bumper and grille to show off your interfooler.

It looks nice, and I'd take it if it didn't have the neon underglow, temp sensor, clock, 12v outlet, iPod holder, molded handles, and tray lights.

It is for the old guys in the in the rich neighborhoods that one up each other even if it has no function...

the high end mechanic and customization shops could use thesee boxs to show off to customers instead of the standard red boxes...

but some of the features are nice but i would not pay the much for one but if at a track trying to show off and all this box will pull attention and does have some nice features like the power strip is nice when tuneing a car you can hook up the power for a laptop and any other equipment to it and the the temp senor will give you a good base outside temp and the clock could be used for timing different actions... if you think hard enough all the features are need except for the neon underglow but that is just for show...

I personally dont think its to bad, the neon underglow is a ricers dream, not my style, but the 12 volt outlets and the build in clock and stuff is actually fairly nice i think, plus i love being able to plug in my music wherever i go. For a thousand bucks, i can spend my money on better things, like a plasma cutter.

I work for Sears, been there 9 years and seen many odd tools come through. This axs tool box has been popular. It's catches everyones eye, good and bad. Some like the underglow others dont. There are some neat features to the tool box. I will stick to my Craftsman ballbearing 40in box.

although i will say i like this box a LOT more than the Craftsman one. it's just way too overpriced despite being much more of a mechanic's box

I saw one of these boxes a few days ago while I was spending my gift card, but it didn't have a price on it. The display box had the top drawer full of those cheezy 'titanium' coated sockets.. I just snickered to myself and walked past it.

I'd still take my Harbor Freight tool box over anything that sears sells because the drawers are deep enough to hold my deep well sockets and all of the drawers have nice sliders that still work flawlessly 5 years after I bought the box. The boxes are strong enough to have survived being moved (full of tools) with a fork lift so many times I've lost count.

Like many other guys have said, I'm sure there's someone who this box is perfect for, it just isn't anyone who uses a tool box to make a living with.

I agree that money is better spent on a plasma cutter. The twelve volt would be cool if it had open terminals so as that you could connect car stuff to it for testing/setup. Otherwise though, I'm happy with my plain red tool chest from sears that grandpa passed onto me.

i think is would be kinda cool for like your basement tools or some tools that you kept in the house you know what i mean ? the tools that u have for a real quick fix in the house ,pound a nail, set a screw , etc .like when you dont want to run out to the grage .

Overpriced, but if you've got more money than you know what to do with, I could see how it would be useful.

I can't stand going more than 3 hours without music, so the radio is nice. All the powerstrips are handy if you use electric tools, the 12v outlet is only useful if you can't use one of the 6 120v outlets... The clock is useful because it's right there, the temperature is nice if you do paint work without a climate controlled booth, OR if you race it's nice to know the temperature at a glance. Also has a timer on it for God knows what. Oh, and it comes with an exterior temperature sensor.

Useless/pointless tings it has:
The underglow
the chrome casters (but it does actually make it look better, because it wouldn't look complete with just standard casters.)

Oh, and it says the accent lighting is sold separately.

Oh, btw phatchevy06, they have chrome 5s on it

i can help ya out there...anytime you are using a chemical (RTV, Bondo) that you need to let set up for a certain amount of time...i just guesstimate but not everyone can/will do that. also handy if you know your wife like the back of your hand and you ticked off the "back of your hand"...a timer to let you know when Hiroshima is over so you can go back inside!

..now if it actually had a fridge in it... then I'd be sold :)

...other than that, whatever blows your hair back. if you base buying this toolbox off of whether or not people will point and laugh or make fun of you, you're got bigger problems than what toolbox you should buy...

personally, I think its kinda cool in a geeky sort of way - my pc is pimped out in blue LEDs so why not my toolbox (other than the fact that it's a big waste of money... a cheapo stereo in my garage works just fine - plus, it will soon be hooked up to one of my xbox's on my home network so I can stream me mp3s into it... sweet! Oh, sh*t, dropped my pocket protector...)

yeah, i like to have nice stuff and have it nice to look at, but what good is it if it is too nice to use.

that is how i am about my truck. i have it to use as a truck. granted i don't intentionaly scratch it, but if it happens, it happens. i did not buy it to look at, i bought it to use.
