yeah its on its way to getting cold. yeah i believe my frame is tweaked a lil bit, when i get the motor out today im gonna start makin measurements then if it needs it(i think it does), take it to my old body shop and have the frame pulled before i cut the frame off. my junk has been parked since july when i drug through the gas tank. its been sittin and waitin for me to get the money, and accumulate all the parts. which now i do obviously cuz im finally SFBD'in it

Why would the frame be tweaked? Did it take a hit at one time?
Are you using stock spindles with aftermarket control arms?

Why would the frame be tweaked? Did it take a hit at one time?
sadly enough i hit a tree my first winter of driving. body shop that fixed it wrote on the work order that they put 8 hrs of frame pulling time in, well i used to work at a body shop too, ive never put 8 hrs into a frame and still have it tweaked when it came out. specially one where the horn is just barly out. heck ive never put 8 hrs of pulling time into a frame ever and ive worked on trucks that have the driver seat pushed onto the passenger side seat. frame was junk but insurance wanted us to try and fix it, we pulled for a couple hr and got it close but couldnt get it just right, ended up doing a frame swap.
hows my story? haha
Are you using stock spindles with aftermarket control arms?
no, 2" drop spindles with DJM C.A.'s

:word:I work at a body shop as well and agree with you, you either spend a few hours pulling on it to try and get it, and if you can't, then its frame swapping time. If yours is still tweaked I would take it back to the shop that did it originally and have them correct it. Paying for work that never got done would piss me off!
Does one have to remove the engine and trans to do this project? Or are you doing that for some other reason?

im never taking it back to the place that did it before, horrible job on everything, also the accident was coming up on 3 yrs ago haha...ill take it back to my x-body shop cuz my boss liked me so much he still give me discounts on parts and labor and stuff like that. plus the guys i used to work with turned out nuthing but pefection so i trust them with my vehicle.

plans are to rebuild the 4L60E and take out the "E" part, also gonna stroke the 350 to 383. plus with no motor and trans ill be able to flip the frame over and weld the bottom side and get good welds and im planning on putting the frame on a rotisory(sp?) so i can paint all sides of the frame.

There is nothing wrong with your frmae. They are made like that. For some reason, Chevy decided to offset their driveline to the pass. side. My tahoe is the same way. I thought mine was screwed as well, but after some research, it is made like that.

werd to the driveline towards the pass. side
If you ever get a good look at ur rear end youll notice that the driveshaft comes out of the pass. side

thats what i figured, but the truck was in an accident before i got it and im thinking it is tweaked just a little..My passanger front wheel clears the fender a ton more when im laid out, and when i lift it up and down, the camber changes differently then the drivers side..O well i suppose

go to a body shop and ask for a frame chart for your truck. have them make copys and then get to measuring. that will help you determine if your frame is messed up. and yes you can take all the measurements you need while the truck is still together.

Awesome Man... For the jig, i used 1x1 box tube for my 45's so they wouldnt flex (looks like you have flat stock on yours?). one on each side front to back and an X across the rear two. thing didnt move at all, also bolted it to the floor with Hilti Concrete Anchors in the flat plates.
Another thing i learned was the angle i put the main rails in was like 1/2" high at the rear (8' down the new rail) so the front horns were a little off like 3/16"-1/4". (mostly from heat from welding cause frame was bolted down and rear rails were too in back) nothing huge but i wasnt thinking of it. dont have to drop my front horns as much now.., it could play with other things like front suspension angles but i wasnt worried.
biggest thing i noticed with my jig was were you could see the frame flex from cutting out the front coil pocket if you used the new rails as a lever. to me that seems like a weak point and always did if you cut that much metal out of your frame. I'm going to try to box the front pockets in and possibly incorperate the upper cups welded in place. new AVS arms are on the way!

hm well r u getting them? if u are keep me informed on them maybe ill upgrade one day. i just never really did the recearch because if you think about it the OEM mounts cant be that bad because im sure they put alot of research into what material and what not, but yet again they put alot of research into the frame on these truck and i hacked all of it off hahahaha

Oem bushngs are rubber arent they?Poly bushngs are stiff as hell. You want polly for the susp.bushngs.because you dont want any flex at your pivot points. For body mounts they will only stiffen the ride.Good for off road vehicles that get flexed alot,,not needed for street vehicles. Oem would be better for yall's application.

I just did my OBS RCSB used 2x4x3/16. You will have enough room to move the mounts down 3", however, you will likely be into your rockers. I lowered my mounts 2.5", put new bushings on, and am still over bd'd 1/4", though it is likely each individual truck is different.

so if I over drop it 1/4" or whatever, am I looking at doing any major damage to my truck? I mean is it really too much pressure on the cab if it lays on the rockers and not the frame? besides messing up the paint

It's not good for it. If the frame touches the ground the same time as the body, it's ok. You don't want to put all that pressure on your body mounts, rockers, etc.

thats why I dont understand guys running 4, 5, or 6" body drops. theres a local guy here with a obs ecsb with a traditional 6" bd.

The rockers have to be cut off to go that low, and the body is usually plated where it hits the ground. Otherwise, it would tweak everything, and they would only be laying bent rocker

sorry for all the questions, I dont mean to thread jack,
but the steel place called today and said they didnt have 2x4x3/16 only in 1/8". can I use this? My buddy said it should be ok because we are still using the L shape of the stock frame, and welding in the cross memebers.

I believe it would, but there are plenty of people that will say it won't be strong enough and that you need AT LEAST 3/16". Without doing actual inertia calcs, i believe you would have very similar bending properties vertically and improved lateral bending, as well as torsional properties.
Yea i wouldnt use 1/8". I used 3/16 on mine and theres still quite a bit of frame flex.

but you still have most of the stock frame in place? I dont see how it would weaken it

Nevermind. Im gonna go with 3/16. better safe than sorry.
Ill stop thread jacking now, Slammed97 post some progress!

1/8" or .120 wall will be fine, most race frames that see more flex than our trucks are .85 or .120 wall. :read:
