Has anyone in their 2WD truck or just left their 4x4 in the 2WD mode and taken it off-road and made it through successfully? I'm curious on their performance off-road sense i'm a 2WD owner myself. Got any pointers other than always bring someone that can pull you out.

Sometimes..... I leave my truck in 2wd most of the time when I'm on sand.... Sand is alot more fun in 2wd. Kicking up rooster-tails kicks ass. :head:

I would not do it in muddy type conditions, I have left my Z71 in 2wd... thats just in the easy stuff and it does slip a lot, when I get to the deeper/wetter mud i put it in 4wd. If you have someone that can pull you out go see what it can do, if you have a locker its going to be pretty fun.

it all depends on how bad/muddy it is. red2wd goes offroad in his 2wd silverado. i like to leave it in 2wd if its not too bad, becasue you slide around more and it fun, then if i get stuck, or start slipping badly, there's good ole 4wd. but i think an average stock 4x4 would tear up an average modified 2wd for the most part anyday.

2wd is alot of fun. ive gonna up some pretty steep trails in 2wd that some trucks would not be able to do in 4x4. on sand, you can have alot of fun in 2wd, but do not forget to air down. a locker makes a huge difference if you have a 2wd.

2wd can be alot of fun and can mess you up if you try to cross a hole in 2wd and dig yourself in.. I did not have a front drive shaft for a while in my brown truck so i have to use 2wd it was fun but require alot of go pedal..

if you know how to drive then you can do a LOT in 2WD. i leave my Z71 in 2HI a lot of times and just play around. a friend's stock jeep wrangler (2002) got stuck in a mudhole during lunch one day which 4 HI and LO wouldnt save him from, when i went to rescue him i was in 2WD all through the water hole and up until the time i pulled him out. you have to know when to goose it, and when to feather it. momentum is NOT always your friend. momentum breaks sh!t. sometimes you will do a whole lot better if you go easy and feather your way out of a potential stuck. if your really serious about off-roadin your 4x2 then do the following: if you dont have a locker, get one. if you dont have a lift, even a mild one, get one. get some decent off road tires also, those new Super Swamper LTB's would probably be ideal for your truck, ya know, some 33's or 34's. and most importantly, invest in a winch, or if ya dont mind workin, an industrial pull-pal. well, good luck with whatever ya do.

ya i know a guy with a 2wd truck.... a old phord... with lots of horse power...... and form it looks like.... a 2wd with a lift and good horse power preforms fairly good actually! But make SURE u get a locket!! it also depends on the driver.... its not as good as 4wd.... but it works :read:

I love mudding in a 2wd, but I think getting stuck and getting out is part of the fun. I have heard from a lot of people and websites that if you were to get an ARB air locker which is 650$, that is some cases a 2wd will perform even better than a 4wd with no lockers. I find this hard to believe, but I dont have any experience with them so who am i to deny it. Anyways, I dont think that 2wd would ever keep me from going mudding anywhere I would with a 4wd, the only difference is that you know you are gonna get stuck and you have to have a heavy foot. Of course you are gonna get stuck more, just keep a tow rope and buddy with a 4x4 with you. just my .02

dito! i allways went offorading in pairs with my 2wd...... that way u can help eath other out of the mud.... and bring really long tow straps/ropes/chains.... cause if yur buddy is a 2wd... he might need to be about 100+ feet away from the mud to get some traction to pull u out!

The only time I ever liked 2wd riding was with the 38's. Other than that, it was just embarassing.

when i i am in the mud i leave it in 2wd as long as possible. i love to spin around and have no traction. i went mudding this weekend and left it in 2wd the whole time and i was fine i wanted to test the limits of the 2wd drive. i didnt get myself into anything i couldnt get out of

Done it many times. Yes ive gotten stuck. but always had someone with me to pull me out. Sometimes its easy stuff you get stuck on, sometimes its deep stuff people arent sure how you made it that far. Its pretty fun in 2wd but not as fun as able to romp in deep stuff and tough trails as it is in 4wd.

Yes, its possible. I took my 2wd s10 off road a lot. Put a lockright in and it did real well then.
Main problem I had was no low range, I got the transmission too hot and it finally lost reverse.

All trophy trucks are not 2wd. Many of them are 4wd.

But a locked up 2wd in many (most) situations will be able to go farther than a completely open 4wd. Once an open 4wd gets a tire off the ground foreward progress is stopped. Once you get a tire off the ground in a locked 2wd then you will still have one for forward progress. Seems wierd but it's true.

Shoot, I did more offroadin' in my '82 Buick Regal, with bald tires, back in High School than I have ever done with my Z71. Mostly county roads, service roads and simple ATV trails, but it was a LOT of fun. One time in particular was after it rained, and I took on some pretty serious puddles. By the time we made it back to main roads, I had mud clear over the roof, and had to drive with the windows down to see out the sides! A 2WD truck can handle all that, and much more.

I only got stuck once, after shooting through 50ft long puddles (not muddy) on a two track, and coming up on another twice that size. I turned around, but the front wheels got stuck in the rut.

I actually chased Dan Cook in his Chevy 4x4 Trophy Truck, Unlimited Class. There were also a Jeep Liberty, a Kia Sportage, and several other trucks in the Unlimited Class which, were 4x4's. The course was extra rough this year so some decided to go that route, others run 4x4's every year. I got pictures of more 4x4's in the unlimited class and other classes too.

I stand corrected then....Im assuming its safe to say that MOST TT's are 2wd then.
