View Full Version : is it illegal to have two cats? Beaner 88 12-22-2007, 06:06 PM just a quick question....i live in las vegas nevada and i went to a muffler shop and they said that it was illegal to have 2 catalitic converter...i plan to run true duals on my truck.. FordeatinZ71 12-22-2007, 06:10 PM that is the silliest crap i've ever heard. i think you need to find a new muffler shop... Chevy1500z71 12-22-2007, 06:13 PM i have no cats or egr and im prety sure no cop will ever check me... im in florida tho. more cats are beter for the environment why would that be ilegal? 2nd Time Round 12-22-2007, 06:13 PM The only thing that I'm aware of is putting cats on a vehicle that wasn't originally designed for cats. Possible risk of fire. Why would it possibly be illeagal to have more emission control devices? EDIT: No matter what gets said here, check your state laws. They may have a reason for not allowing such a modificaion. justy 12-22-2007, 06:36 PM My old truck came from the factory with 2 cats. So no it's not illegal. Chevy1500z71 12-22-2007, 06:37 PM even if they dont alow things like that i dont see why a muffler shop wouldnt just do it as a cash job. my budy has 5 cats on his ranger, the muffler shop charged 50$ cash per cat because they know no one else will do it for you. NEUMANNZZ 12-22-2007, 06:37 PM there might be some clause that you have to have the cat in the stock location and having more or relocating it is illegal, or the exhaust place doesnt want the added liability to install one where it might cause a problem. Chevy1500z71 12-22-2007, 06:38 PM my buddys got a 200 2500 6.0 with stock true daul cats. what year is your truck? NEUMANNZZ 12-22-2007, 06:40 PM nbs trucks have dual cats. FordeatinZ71 12-22-2007, 06:42 PM even if they dont alow things like that i dont see why a muffler shop wouldnt just do it as a cash job. my budy has 5 cats on his ranger, the muffler shop charged 50$ cash per cat because they know no one else will do it for you. 5 cats...? you can tell your friend that FordeatinZ71 on FSC.com thinks he's a fuggin idiot... Koots 12-22-2007, 06:47 PM My guess is that it is a problem with moving the original cat out of it's position. but for there to ba problem with 2 cats doesn't make any sense. they frown on those who run without cats and now they frowm upon those who operate with more than originally equipped. That sounds rediculous, just like having 5 cats on a Ranger. that doesn't even remotely make sense. with that amount of restriction in the exhaust path, the ranger is probably struggling to even move. unless he is heavily modified with a V8 swap. Even than it is pointless and rather wasteful. not to diss you or anything, just questioning your friend. FordeatinZ71 12-22-2007, 06:48 PM hey, he doesn't need your approval, he's a platinum member at Kaleco Auto thebigo432 12-22-2007, 06:53 PM Ive seen the exhaust system in the newer rangers and there is definintantly at least 3 cats on there, one on each downpipe from the manifold, then after the y pipe, and then god knows what after that NEUMANNZZ 12-22-2007, 06:59 PM I know v6 3.0 flex fuel rangers have 2 precats and a final cat. Emissions laws are different state to state. here in cali its about the location and how the exhaust is run before the cat. after the cat its a little more lenient for exhaust setups. FordeatinZ71 12-22-2007, 07:02 PM yea, i can see 3 cats (although i still think thats a little ridiculous. if Ford made their engines as good as GM (heheh, had to slip that in there) then they wouldn't need 3-4 cats to make them run clean. Redneck Rebel 12-22-2007, 07:10 PM The only time its illegal to have 2 cats is if your vehicle has less than 50,000 miles on it and didnt come equipped with 2 cats. If you have less than 50,000 miles it is illegal to replace the cats in any way shape or form Chevy1500z71 12-22-2007, 07:12 PM 5 cats...? you can tell your friend that FordeatinZ71 on FSC.com thinks he's a fuggin idiot... lol, i forgot to mention that the shoip charges 50 per REMOVAL the truck cam with 5 cats he removed 2 of them and threw a flowmaster 40 on it for 250$ Chevy1500z71 12-22-2007, 07:15 PM the ranger has a cat after each exhaust manuifold and an extra cat on the driver side part of the y pipe in the midle before it dumps into 2 huge final cats. so that=5 cats. it had an ultra low emisions sticker on the window... we put the sticker on my window as a joke lol Chevy1500z71 12-22-2007, 07:17 PM you knwo what you gota do with a muffler shop like that, just roll up with open headers and say you need an exhuast and you need 2 cats. i went with open headers to save money on the "cat removal" charge even tho my cat was halowed out. and it was just plain awsome driving down with open headers on open loop, all noise no power 91chevZ71 12-22-2007, 07:17 PM hey, he doesn't need your approval, he's a platinum member at Kaleco Auto LMAO bored&stroked 12-23-2007, 04:59 PM Heck mustangs come with 4 cats. Your muffler shop might be reffering to the fact you can't change the factory cat untill xx,xxx miles unless it goes bad. I would find another shop myself. indytruck 12-23-2007, 07:05 PM For every shop that obeys the laws to the t, their's at least one or two that will do it for you as long as you pay with green and don't expect a receipt... FordeatinZ71 12-24-2007, 10:12 AM i've had two cats for years now...:dunno: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/leese0924/Photo_042507_001.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/leese0924/Pookie.jpg dave89iroc 12-24-2007, 11:27 AM there might be some clause that you have to have the cat in the stock location and having more or relocating it is illegal, or the exhaust place doesnt want the added liability to install one where it might cause a problem. bingo, its a federal law hornsfan10609 12-24-2007, 11:39 AM I know places around here won't take your cats off until you've got 70K miles on your vehicle. Then they (the government) expect you to buy new cats, not just take them off. My mustang came with four, now it's got 2 high flow versions on an X pipe. 91chevZ71 12-24-2007, 11:41 AM my old pancake cat was removed for two high flows. no big deal, I think my truck was over the mileage limit Chevy1500z71 12-24-2007, 02:10 PM why would you spend money on high flow cats? just run no cats, theres no advantage at all to runing a cat... unless they test emisions around your area? Pauly 12-25-2007, 03:28 PM why would you spend money on high flow cats? just run no cats, theres no advantage at all to runing a cat... unless they test emisions around your area? the advantage is a truck that doesnt smell like crap and air that is more breathable. peace Pauly Chevy1500z71 12-25-2007, 03:42 PM smell like crap? have you smelled a worn out roten egg cat before? id rather smell burnt gas than roten eggs. vBulletin v3.5.1, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
