The stock cats are always gonna kill you on sound. If you have to have them, try and see if you can get some high flo cats, most only lose 2db of noise. If you can't, than their's the age old water hose. Their isn't too much detail and it's pretty simple. First you need to get your truck hot, like beating on it for a good half hour, hot. Next take a garden hose and spray the outside down to cool it off extremly quick and than rap on it with a hammer. You can also just shove the garden hose up the tail pipes, but that always depends on how many bends you have... good luck

It's unavoidable with glasspack mufflers because the fiberglass absorbs water vapors from the spent exhaust. The mufflers get really hot from regular or spirited driving, and then they cool down with all that water stuck in them. This heat cycling eventually breaks the fiberglass down and achieves the similar effect of hitting the mufflers with cold water and a mallet/hammer. One method is just much quicker than the other.

depends on the type. if they are louvered, then yes turning them backwards will make them louder. if they are just mesh, non louvered then turning them around will not make much of a difference.

but really, how many post does this make on how to make your exhaust louder? and they are all pretty much the same question just asked in a different way.

Seriously speaking, I've heard before you put them on you could also soak them in gas or some flammable liquid and light it up. Burns up all the fibers. Never tried it myself, tho. Worth a try. Or even hollow them out 'cause if you burn the fibers you still have the perforated tube. Turns into a "1-chamber" :aniteef: I've thought about getting some long ones for my truck and doing the same thing. Never heard one before so I don't know how it would sound. :dunno:

The main reason why I haven't done it. I like coming out to my pickup every morning and still sitting there in one peice. I don't want that kind of attention.

Just pick a good quality exhaust on it and it will sound nice and impressive but not be to loud. I promise you'll get tired of that a lot sooner than you think!

Oh it'll be cool for a while. But at some point you'll look around and notice that you're one of the very few that still thinks it's cool and realize it just annoys the hell out of everybody else. Not trying to bust your chops, but if you start paying attention you'll notice that the vast majority of people driving around with really loud trucks are high school age kids. When it's 3am and you've got to get up and go to work in a few hours and someone drives by and hammers the throttle, every dog around starts barking and your wife starts b%#chin' you won't be thinkin' "Hey, that sounded cool!"

exactly, like tclark said. nearly every straight piped truck out there belongs to a young kid.

and also, is EVERYone has straighs, why do you wanna be like all of them. if you had a good sounding truck, with a good muffler you would stand out from the crowd and people would ask "whos truck was that?" because it sounds different. why blend in with the crowd? you can still have decently loud with a muffler, but it will sound much better with a good muffler. say a cherry bomb chambered one, or a flowmaster.

if glasspacks aren't loud enough then there is something wrong with your truck or your head. i've got a cherry bomb glasspack, but no cat, and it's ridiculously loud. i'll be glad when winter is over and i can go back to my magnaflow accord.

You could try bullets. they sound different from a regular glasspack and are really loud when you get on it, but they sound like a normal flowmaster at idle and cruising which is deep and not offensive. My truck sounded too quiet with flowmaster 50 series and then a 40 series because of the cats but now the bullets are just right, they are extremely loud when you want them to be, but sound like a decently quiet aftermarket exhaust when your cruising. and they are cheap like glasspacks. i wish i had them last year when i was still in high school, now my truck just sits in front of my dorm room all week.

My friend has Glasspacks on his Tahoe. He did the water hose trick it made it sound really loud, but when he took off it sounded more loud then good. In basic terms it sounded really $#!^y. But loud.

I have heard that you can put the glass packs in a fire and it will cause the fiberglas to break down rapidly then when it cools down enough use a hose to flush the glass out...but make sure you dont try this while the glasspacks are still on the truck...lol

I have straight pipes on the Z with 3 inch stainless tips they are loud when I want them to be, but quiet enough in town so as not to draw attention to them....

Good hell kid you've been asking the same questions and getting the same answers for months now. Loud isn't always good. Why not get a nice muffler & tip, shoot em at a 45 out behind the tire, and have a GOOD sounding truck that'll turn heads, not a loud redneck pos straight-piped truck that sounds like sh!t. Have you gotten your dad to agree on gutted glasspacks yet? If not, you're stuck with regular ol' glasspacks. It won't get any louder unless you get rid of the cats, gut the pack, or run straights. You're sh!t outta luck, hopefully you'll have your own truck to do stuff to and then straight pipe it or do whatever the hell you want to it.

If my parents bought me a truck, I'd do what they say and just be happy that I got one for FREE.

I see big old people riding very loud Harley Davidson motorcycles and no one seems to care much. I havnt noticed the same kid asking the same question here,but i do know the same questions get asked over and over again on here,but it makes for good reading imo. This tool is like every kid I knew when I was in high school. It was like a competition who had the loudest ****ing OBS in the parking lot. Just strap some 45 degree tips out the back with a nice setup and call it good. I have factory dual cats with dual 32" glasspacks and I get compliments on how nice it sounds, something I'd rather have then pissing everyone in my neighborhood off by simply starting my truck up. i ain't got any sound clips of mine but that link a couple posts up should have something or just do a search theres plenty around. just remember it's better to have someone say wow that truck sounded really nice rather than wow that truck was really loud then have that followed by to bad it sounded like absolute $h*t cuz i know plenty of people that do everything they can to get their truck as loud as possible and then when they get it there it sounds horrible but they think its cool cuz its the loudest in town. funny part is people may talk about the ridiculously loud truck but it'll usually go like this dam his truck is loud to bad it sounds horrible. then i roll up and my truck speaks for itself. people will remember and talk good about a truck that sounds nice. usually people will just shake their heads and give you dirty looks when you have a loud truck not because its loud but because its loud and doesn't sound good.

take off your glasspacks, get a set of Cherry Bomb extreme's and have em put on....
They have the flowmaster esscence and that glasspack pop....especially if you have rolled edge tips on it...

Cherry Bomb extreme is the same thing as a flowmaster one chamber with less internal baffles so therefore they are louder..

find yourself some old mufflers that don't have any holes in them. make sure it's a straight-thru, or else this isn't going to work. take a 5$ piece of pipe from the advance auto store. Stuff it through the muffler openings so you essentially have a straight pipe with a muffler shell around it. Since you don't have an off-set muffler anymore, either remove your passenger side rear shock, or attempt to bend a pipe so it goes around it. Whammo, you have the cheapest straight-pipe-but-doesn't-look-like-it jerry-rigged exhaust. personally, I went with a 3" from the y-pipe collector to a flowmaster 40 and out the back with a regular pipe. Looks clean, sounds good, and eliminates resonance in the cab.

hey here is what i just recently did to my truck. I bought my truck with glasspacks w/ cats on them & thought they were extremely quiet. Until i took off the cats now they r loud & noisy so im puttin in flowmaster 40s to quiet it down a bit & get that deeper tone yet still be loud. If u cant get ur cats out then ur truck will never be as loud as u want it to be. Btw I go to high school & yes i have the loudest truck in school. too loud i think.

18" packs are pretty big and muffle quite a bit. Cherry bomb extremes would be louder and sound much better.

if ur not gonna gut the cats then its not worth gettin another muffler put in cause with glasspack or cherrybomb muffler is the only way to get it loud. & not even that loud. flowmaster & mag jus gives u a deeper soundin truck but nothin outrageously loud unless u gut those cats.
