The 400 is killing me, I need another gear! Is the 700r4 strong enough to handle being in a one ton (that is used like a one ton)?

View Full Version : 700r4 work in a one ton? ahawes 12-27-2007, 12:05 AM The 400 is killing me, I need another gear! Is the 700r4 strong enough to handle being in a one ton (that is used like a one ton)? Ivan D. 12-27-2007, 12:25 AM 700R4 ain't strong enough to handle being in a Caprice that is used as a daily-driver... can be beefed up tho, just find someone who's good with these trannies (real good) and after the install and before driving the truck make darn sure the TV cable is set right. GreaseDog 12-27-2007, 04:42 AM in a 1 ton that's going to be used as a 1 ton... NO WAY a 700 is going to survive. look into a gear vendors overdrive. BHB 12-27-2007, 09:33 PM If you go with a 700, get an aftermarket one, built for the application. and DEFINITLEY get a big trans cooler. beater truck 12-30-2007, 08:38 AM consider this, in the old S-10 pick ups with the 2.8 V6, these trannies didn't hold up... BHB 12-30-2007, 09:49 AM consider this, in the old S-10 pick ups with the 2.8 V6, these trannies didn't hold up... Different, earlier version of the 700R4 altogether. trickedout420 12-30-2007, 11:15 AM bowtieoverdrives.com FordeatinZ71 12-30-2007, 11:30 AM yep, bowtie overdrives. you get one of their extreme duty 700's and it'll hold up fine. Chevyman247 12-30-2007, 11:56 AM I would keep the 400 and get a gear vendors overdrive. Or bowtie overdrives extreme duty 700r4, which ever is cheeper. NEUMANNZZ 12-30-2007, 12:24 PM get a 4L80E!! 44gmcnewf 12-30-2007, 11:19 PM install a lower first gear in th th 400. My dad had it done in is 76 and it made a world of difference. FordeatinZ71 12-30-2007, 11:25 PM i think he meant he needs another gear at the TOP end. meaning, he needed an OD... bored&stroked 12-31-2007, 01:27 PM yep, bowtie overdrives. you get one of their extreme duty 700's and it'll hold up fine. Funny, my bowtie overdrives torque convertor went out in 6,000miles and the torque convertor lockup soleniod lasted a whooping 7,000. And they had such great tech service to help me out  If your going to go all out rebuilding a 4sp then the 200-4R is much stronger in full tilt build. A 4L80e is the best you can get but requires a stand alone computer to manage it which costs at least $600. A gear vendors hardly gives you any overdrive [only .82] and cost huge $$$$$, not worth it at all IMO. FordeatinZ71 12-31-2007, 02:43 PM well, you are the first i've heard thats had a complaint with them out of many people...sorry to hear about that... GreaseDog 12-31-2007, 03:38 PM tom is by far not the first to complain. if you buy one of their trannys and not the pressure gauge or the TV Made EZ setup, you're pretty much on your own when it comes time for warranty work. bthomas454 12-31-2007, 06:31 PM A 4L80e is the best you can get but requires a stand alone computer to manage it which costs at least $600. an '80e can be had with a full manual valvebody for a lot less than a computer swap. :read: average price used is roughly 500 add the manual valvebody for 250 and your set with a trans that will hold 700+ hp all day GreaseDog 12-31-2007, 09:54 PM links to $250 80E manual valve body? Chevyman247 12-31-2007, 10:14 PM werd, link to manual valve body or stfu. FordeatinZ71 01-01-2008, 02:20 AM tom is by far not the first to complain. if you buy one of their trannys and not the pressure gauge or the TV Made EZ setup, you're pretty much on your own when it comes time for warranty work. well, thanks for that info. do you have a company you recommend? i'm gettin ready to get a tranny for the GMC and i was gonna go with them...thanks for possibly savin me a lot of money... GreaseDog 01-01-2008, 03:11 AM go local. that way if you have any issues, they're right there, and you dont have to drop a bunch of coin shipping a trans back and forth across the country. do your research, find out what parts you want to upgrade, even supply them to the shop if you can get them cheaper. i spent just over $1300 building my 60E that im putting in my 93, brand new EVERYTHING. if i have a problem, the shop is just about a mile from my garage. i could push my truck to them if necessary. as around your area, im sure there is a reputable trans builder somewhere nearby. Monzter 01-01-2008, 02:18 PM Don't go with a 700R4 in a 1 ton. I've done many 700R4 swaps into cars & 1/2 ton trucks. Anything bigger than a 1/2 ton truck in my opinion is pushing the limits of a 700R4. I'm building a 700R4 for my new Suburban project, I might go to a 4L80E later because I do plan on pulling a car trailer behind it. I'd recommend a Gear Vendor Overdrive or a computer operated 4L80E for heavy duty use. If thats what you want then get a 4-5-6sp manual and reep the benafits of more power going to the ground. Thats just me though :) GreaseDog 01-03-2008, 11:26 PM smoother more consistant gear changes. a manual VB 80E would be great for a mud truck which gets driven on the street. vBulletin v3.5.1, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
