View Full Version : To shave or not to shave

My plan from the beginning was to restore my '87 sierra back to original. Every truck project I've had I shaved everything myself. But they were all newer vehicles. So now i'm torn between shaving it or not since I ran across some shaved trucks like mine that look really really nice. So I wanted other peoples opinion.

IMO, it depends on what you plan on doing with the rest of the truck (paint, suspension, etc.)

I plan on lowering it but not bagging it. Somewhere around a 5/6. As for the paint, I've always wanted to do a flat black.

i think if you go flat black you should shave it. jd

no drip rails, no molding, maybe shave the gas door too, frond and rear roll pans, some fancy mirrors?

leave the drip rail molding, you'll hate it if you dont. get wet every time you open the door with even the lightest of rain.

not to mention these trucks look naked without the drip rail molding. i hate seeing these trucks without it personally

im with grease dog and ford eating on this one. The drip rails were shaved on my old truck when i had it and i put them back on because to much water collected inside of the truck. If it was me i would only shave the fender emblems and the tail gate handle so i could put the blazer trim panel on the back. Dont go with the flat black i think it screams crappy job.

Shave the fenders and any body side moldings. Remove the elephant ear mirrors and add on some sport mirrors. Look at recessing the door handles, maybe with some 88-98 handles. Smooth the tailgate, relocate the handle.

I considered shaving my drip moldings until I read the above comments. Glad I read those, first.

Man, I had already pulled of my drip rails and was ready to weld up the holes. Then I read this... I guess I will be keeping them now. I'm definatly doing the blazer trim on the tailgate. I think I'm going to keep everything else but the molding. If I could find the emblems for my fenders I would put them on. No luck yet so I'll probably just fill the holes. Still stuck on what color to paint it.

I am completely shaving mine except for the handles. I just like the way the door handles look. Plus I had shaved handles on one of my neons and hated it. I may look at leaving drip rails too after hearing these negatives:dunno:

I think if the right wheel and tire are done with that drop and flat black it could look really nice.

This thread proves the Custom Deluxes are truly "Custom Deluxes"

I have nothing to shave except one set of fender badges. The drip mouldings will stay. I like my crank windows and basic interior. I can add new stuff that I want instead of trying to repair 20+year old technology. Yes I am still waiting for that markerlight from Cali. I paid $20 shipped from Ebay. Way less than LMC. The Christmas Holiday threw Fedex off a little bit.

either he shaved the fuel door or that has a 73-81 bed. because in 82 they moved the fuel door on single tank trucks to the driver's side...nice truck though!

I say don't shave it and see how long you can resist. If you've shaved everything else you've had in the past its only a matter of time before this one gets it too:hack:

Now I really wish I could drop my 87! Sweet truck!

FordeatinZ71
01-01-2008, 10:21 PM
you could drop it. but why? these trucks are badass in the fact that they look good lowered AND lifted...and if it's a 4x4, it NEEDS to be lifted...

Jaymez
01-01-2008, 11:24 PM
It won't fit in my garage if it's lifted and it's in its current condition because it sat outside for 20 years! I'm not doing all that work just to redo it again in another 20 years.

I keep being told I can't drop it because it's a 4x4 and I want it to stay that way.

FordeatinZ71

what if you just did a SMALL lift...like a 2 or a 4"?

The garage is only 4 years old!

I built a shelf to store my old computer parts on. It fell the next day with 4 monitors, three PCs, three TVs, two VCRs, and a DVD player on it. I'm staying away from carpentry.

Take a guess as to why it fell. The shelf was thick enough and it was supported on three sides.

Yes, I am a :jackass: and I should have known better.

Besides, I want to add a 4 post lift in one bay to park the GTO and Nova in the same bay have room for another project.

I have the same problem my trucks roof rubs some parts of the underground garage so I can never lift it. I like the looks of these lowered trucks, but mearly posting about lowering a 4x4 truck brings out the flamers big time on every forum. The mere thought of it is sacralidge or something.:argue: :dunno:

I *can* lower my Silverado 4x4 and I will as soon as I'm done with the K10. If anyone has a problem with it, they can buy it from me for $35,000 cash any time. No, it's not worth that much, but, I'd be able to pay off what I owe on it and use the rest for a down payment on either a G8 ST or a V8 Colorado.
