I'm looking at getting a 2500HD with the 6.6 Dura. But I was just wondering what kind of mpg is average, and any other thing that I should know and be aware of having not ever owned a diesel before. Any help would be gratly appriciated.

I'm pulling 17hwy stock, you don't want to know my city mpg my foot gets too heavy around town. You buying new or used, and what year model makes a difference.

I'm not set yet on whether it will be new or used. I have also heard that GM is putting out a light duty diesel thats supposed to get 30+ mpg. I don't really need a lot of pulling power but I do have a 20ft boat that I pull to the lake, but its only like 5,000 lbs. If I do get a used truck, in the 03-06 range, what do I need to look for to make sure its a good truck. Like I said I'm a diesel newb

If you buy used look it over. If it has a lot of aftermarket stuff. Theres a chance its had the crap ran out of it.

This is true, i passed on a couple of trucks that had as little as an exhaust (i figured they just pulled the programmer). I was paranoid about the trans, and ended up with a completly stock truck. 03-04.5 trucks still had the lb7 motor which had injector problems, but now have a 200k mile warranty. LLy's had some cooling problems when pulling heavy loads but since you're not i wouldn't worry about it. And i don't know of any issues with the 2nd gen lly, lbz, or lmm.

The eighth # in the vin tells which motor and correct me if i'm wrong on these.

1=lb7
2=lly
3=2nd gen lly
?=lbz it's some letter just don't remember a d maybe?
I don't know the lmm but they came in all the nnbs trucks so don't really need to know it.

Try this site

Even though you have a lot of info here DP is pretty much dedicated to Duramax and has a wealth of information . I use both sites but for Diesel its a larger source of information . This place is more designed for gassers - just my op .

I have an 07 Duramax and did the bully dog programmer, intake and cut the muffler off and I get between 18-20 mpg.

Ive been thinking of getting the same exact type of truck, and I have also been looking for these answers. So thanks from me too. But what about in the cold vs and warmth which does brings better MPG? ANd would i ALWAYS have to plug it in during the winter here in michigan?

Winter fuel gets worse mileage, but you can lose mileage if the engine temp is to hot or to cold. No you wouldn't but it would be wise once its close to 0. They will start without being plugged in at -30.

I never had a problem up in Traverse City

Truck will start a little hard when it's below 0 and run rough for a few minutes. Plugging in the umbilical cord certainly helps.

If you can wait, I would wait for the diesel half ton HD. That will pull that 20 foot boat easy. And what I've read it gets really good mileage. It's a more efficient diesel then the 6.6 duramax is. I plan on getting one in 2009, Then I'm going to look for about a 24-25ft 5th wheel camper for it.

They Half Ton HD coming out in 2009. And about how do you think they are going to be?

I think they will be good. Fuel mileage wise for sure. And what I've read it has the same towing power of the early 6.6 duramax 310 hp / 520 torque. Pretty good for a little half-ton. I'm sure the 1500 HD should have a nice smooth ride also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J4wFwIXC7U

Wow. That seems nice. I was talking to someone and they said they will get around 30 MPG just in the city and HWY would be around 36-42 Depends tho.

Those numbers seem kinda high. I would expect something a little more along the lines of 19-20 city and 26-27 highway.

I get 20 in the summer and some where between 16.5 and 18 on winter blend. I run Power Service in every tank full and I have to be told I'm not a kid any more constantly by my wife. This dog wants to run!!!!:naughty:

2001-2004=lb7
2004.5-2006=lly
2006.5-2007=lbz
2007.5+ lmm

i have a lb7 the very first year. i run 33" tires, have exhuast intake and efi live tuning with a dsp2 switch. if i keep it on my smoke tune it get about 23hwy and it a 70hp gain over stock. if i run my 520 race tune then its about 17hwy. but i only turn it on when a silly rice burner wants to play
