I have a 90 Silverado. It has a rebuilt 305 in it. It is time to get rid of it as its not running well anymore, and I basically just want a motor with some power. What kind of things am I going to need.. New injectors? Higher flow maybe? Intake?

I am aiming for around the 400 HP range, give or take.

I need to start gettin the ball rolling, and I really dont know where to start, and what my best options are.

Aiming for 400Hp is roughly double the power you have now, so it will take alot to get there. What kind of budget have you decided on? First off, I would go with a 383 stroker, more cubes makes it easier to get more power. There are quite a few 383 crate engines out there to chose from. Here's one from Scoggin Dickey: http://www.sdparts.com/product/12498772/ZZ383425425HP383SmallBlockCrateEnginewithAluminumHeads.aspx

It will take a good intake and exhaust to support that 400+Hp. Do you plan on sticking with fuel injection, or is running a carb an option? Personaly I would go with a good carb intake but run a 4 barrel throttle body. Lots of other smaller thing to do, too. Have a good one!

MPFI with 16196395 or 16197427 PCM is another option to consider.:burn:

I had my eyes on the 383. Is changing to carb something I should consider? What is the downside to doing this, etc.

Or would it be better to buy a nice tbi intake and some higher flow injectors and keep it tbi?

Thanks for the relplies guys.

Depends what you use the truck for. Is it a daily driver, do you drive it in cold weather, etc etc.

If it's a weekend & fair weather toy, a carb is the simplest, easiest to tune, and cheapest option.

EFI is nice in a winter driven vehicle, or a daily driver.

If you decide to get into DIY tuning, be prepared to spend lots of time reading here and on thirdgen.org. You'll have to lay a fair bit of cash down to get set up for it too. Before you know it, the price has snowballed.

So what I am getting from this is that my best bet is going to be to carb it? Its not my daily driver but when I do drive it I drive it lots. It is not going to see anything below freezing. What are the downsides to carbing it?

No, you just haven't heard the guys with fuel injection chime in trying to convince you to stay FI.

Why convert your fuel injected truck over to a carb? Your going back in time.

Why take the easy way out?

Learn to DIY tune, and then you can get good gas mileage too!

Just some food for thought.

My personal preference is to stick with FI, but I have been working with FI for years and burn my own chips, and it is not my truck. I'm looking at doing a TPI swap on my '94 K2500 later this year. I have helped on converting older cars over to FI, I enjoy opening the hood of an old car and see modern FI. A buddy's dad has an old Vette that we have done multiple FI swaps on. First TPI, and now it has a 383, blower, big Holley 4 barrel TBI with Commander ECM. It all comes down to what you are willing to learn, do and how much you are willing to spend. The cheap easy way is a carb intake, Edelbrock carb and old school HEI that you could for roughly $500. But that's not as cool as a custom FI setup. Have a good one!

Sell the TBI system and get a sequential setup You can do the same with TPI and LTI.

TBI sucked stock because the heads flowed like molasses. Unless you get a good pair of cast heads the TBI would be worthless.

vortec heads are great, couple things to consider when running with TBI
EGR, intake bolt pattern, tuning, TBI mods

I would look into a homemade port fuel setup with the 7427. It can be ran with the 700R4

:whatever: You don't have a clue what you are talking about. There are very few benifits to a sequential EFI setup over a PFI setup.

Well I ordered a GMPP Ramjet 350. Got here about a week ago..

That should solve all my problems. :)
