View Full Version : Dimmer knob turns cargo lamp on after battery short.... why?

2000 Silv X-cab Z71 LT 5.3

My battery in my truck bounced up yesterday, arc-ed to the hood, electrified it, and set a few things on fire. I have to replace a few wires, a headlight, and a few interior bulbs, but, other than that, it seems all right.

The only weird problem remaining is that when I turn my dimmer switch all the way up, my dome light does not come on, and my speedo display says "Cargo Lamp On" (the cargo lamp does not come on, though, or the bulb is out). When I press the cargo lamp button, I get the exact same behavior.

Any ideas where to start to fix this?

well if the only 2 ways to turn it on dont work i would assume either the bulb is out or its not getting power.

The dimmer knob is not SUPPOSED TO be a way to turn it on. It only started showing that "Cargo Lamp On" indication after the short.

My primary question is, "Why does the dimmer know seem to activate my cargo lamp?" and "How do I fix it?"

If it was my year ('04) I would suspect that the body control module got corrupted.

It seems like if the BCM got corrupted that there would be other issues, and are you just guessing?

does ur dimmer knob control your dome light?? Cause on my dads truck the the cargo light comes on with the dome light and the dimmer switch controls the dome light.

My dimmer knob does control my dome light, and the cargo lamp did not formerly come on when I turned the dimmer light knob all the way up.

On my truck the BCM reads the dimmer control and sets the dash lamp intensity by pulse width modulation (PWM) of the power to the dash lamps. It also reads the cargo light switch and controls the cargo light relay. It is a guess; but since the BCM is the place where these circuits come together, I think it is a reasonable guess.

If it did corrupt something in the cargo lamp/dimmer/dash light circuit, possibly even the BCM, do any of you see any way to fix it other than a new BCM?

OK, I just saw how cheap BCMs are. If I get one, is there a way to get it programmed correctly other than paying the dealer? If I have to pay the dealer, how much would that run me?
