Not sure what to call it so I figured "rebuild thread" would be ok. Stepsidebowtie is getting a cosmetic makeover in and out. Modifications include:
-New paint (too hard to describe, just wait and see)
-interior painted pearl white to match exterior
-Royal blue carpet and seat (I think)
-Few Billet interior pieces hear and there -- not too much
-Intro Twisted Vista steering wheel
-March Performance pullies Style Track system with new alternator, a/c compressor, water pump and power steering pump.
-Street Scene compeletely smooth wiper cowl.
-East Coast customs step shaver kit.
-Cab seams shaved
-anatenae shaved
-firewall smoothed
-engine block smoothed and painted
- Smooth rear window, no more sliding window.
- paint or powder coat spindels
thats about all I can think of at the moment
So far, Interior is about 70% removed, Everything on the firewall that is not needed is trashed (cruis control & wiper motor are really the only two things) Engine and tranny are ready to be pulled. This past weekend I got my inner fenders redone and I am sorry to say that is all the progress pics I have at this point. I apologize but this thread will move slowly as I work on the truck in NC and live in MD....So be pateint with me -- on with the pics
Before installing the trailer fender I skinned the fenders with 16 gage sheet metal to smooth them out.

Keeping it a secret was the plan, but I get so bummed being in MD and not working on it which makes me unmotivated. I figured this would help. And yes, Jeremey is sparying this sucker for me (though I haven't told him about this thread). Shooting for end of March, first of April. BUt I got a new baby coming in March, so the timeline may change. I am going to try to have it ready for Carlisle......Just have to wait and see I guess.

I hear ya man, I looked at so many pics of inner fenders on here trying to see what I could do differently. I layed out the sheet metal and covered as much of the fender as possible -- then it took like an hour or so positioning the fender to where I was happy with them. The determining factor was that little box on the drivers side where all the wiring comes out for the lights on the front. I put it below the box but that put the fender all out of wack in comparison with the tire. Then I positioned the fender a liitle higher than the box and left enough room so I could run the wires underneath the fender so you won't be able to see them.
Jason, I did call that guy about the seats. I am going to try and make my way up there this weekend to take a look at it. I felt its better to put my own eyes on them than someone elses.
Thanks again to everyone for the compliments, but I am a humble type of guy. The guys on here that know me know that I have always thought of my truck as mediocre at best.

one suggestion if you are messing with your firewall..
If you never want to bodydrop your truck, you might want to think about recessing that convenience center wiring module into the firewall. It will make your life way easier, and you won't have to rework the firewall later. Its easy to do it now, and you don't have to mess with anything under the dash at all for clearance.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/low88/firewallrecess.jpg
And your truck is hardly mediocre.

So does everything actually unplug from that module? I was fooling with this weekend but thought I might break something so I quit. Jeremy is doig most of the work on the firewall -- I may let him fool with recessing that thing.
I doubt I'll bodydrop it b/c I did not account for that when I did the fenders and I am sure it'll be a PITA if I have to redo them. I'll have to look at them again, there may be plenty off room left between the tire and fender.

It all looks like one unit but there are a couple of seperate connectors there and they all unplug.

02-05-2008, 06:02 AM
and here's another one for ya. Since I will be running no wipers, would it be a bad idea to weld up all the holes on the cowl so I can close up those drip holes on the firewall where water runs out from getting in the cowl(see bottom left corner of pic to see what I am talking about)? I wasnt to get rid of as much crap off the firewall as possible. The truck will probably seldom see rain anyway.

Only bad thing I can see with recessing that box is if you ever have to unplug those wires again, how would you go about doing it? I mean, I doubt you'd ever have to once the whole deal is said and done. But you never know.

There is a hex bolt in the middle of that connector.. unbolt it in the center, and you can pull the harness module off. There are like 3-4 pieces that inter-connect, but I took mine off as one unit. I have had it on and off like 3-4 times now pulling the cab and what not, it is really easy.
As far as pulling the wires again, that connector only goes in an inch or so. all you have to do to get it off is jack up the truck to give it some room between the tire and connector, and it comes off very easy. I can take a picture for you tonight if you wanna see.. I can take mine off laid out on a 35 series 20" tire without too big of a problem.
Your fenders should be fine as well. Mine have an inch over a 35 series 20, and yours look tubbed higher than mine. You should be fine for a bodydrop.
When it comes time for hood springs, Hyundai Sonata gas shocks, brackets and ball ends work great on OBS. The ball even threads into the threaded hole for the fender.

Thats a good diea on the gas shocks -- I'll have to remember that.
I may have to ship your ass down to NC to help with this bd IF I ever do it.
I think I am going to seal up the holes in the wiper cowl and shave the drip[ holes on the firewall as well. I think I'll wait until the motor is out beofre I do it just to give me better access to the wiper cowl. I have pulled my airsprings ut up front and put blocks in the pocket and blocks between the axle and notch. I have a helluva good leak in bothe rear airspings I need to diagnose. My dad assemble that while I was out of town and may not have gotten the fitting tight enough. I am going to see if I can get one more round of turn out of them and see if that solves the problem.

If you are going to seal up the cowl area, I would get in there with some POR15 and seal up the inside just in case. Seal the back of all the panels you shave as well.

I agree, I am trying to decide whether to weld them up or use some type of body adhesive. What do you think?
Low88
02-05-2008, 05:42 PM
body adhesive is a good idea up top, because a cowl will cover it anyway. I have seen some cracked bodywork due to adhesives though.. Jeremy can answer that question better than me, but Its a good thought, and you can completly cover the backside no problem.

I am going to try like hell to have it there (Carilise). My wife is pregnant and right now the baby is breeched (a$$ down) and if he doesn't turn, they are gong to schedule a C-section earlier than her due dat which is like mid March. So unless my wife cuts me loose for a couple of weekends so i can make it to NC to work on it, it may be at least a month or so before I can touch the truck again. I'll admit, the number of reference photos that you sent was a bit confusing. But you did well in describing which aspects from each you wanted to use.
I don't think flaming the rear fenders would work again. It worked on your old paint job because the flames were single-layered. With this scheme, it would be too busy IMO. But if you want, I can take a stab at it.
What resolution do you have your monitor set at? PM me your email address and I'll send over the original as well as a resized one that will fit your wallpaper without distortion. Might not be until tonight though -- I have an offsite meeting at 1, so I'll be on the road over lunchtime.

(are you the one I hung out with for a bit at Carlisle last year -- you, your wife and kid? I can't for the life of me remember your name)
Thanks for the compliment and I understand what you are saying about the current scheme. But from the time it rolled out of the paint booth I have never really loved it. I wanted something more like what chuggs chopped for me. When I dropped it off to the guy for paint, I gave him pics, told him in great detail what I wanted. And as you see, what I got was nothing compared to what I wanted. I told the guy I wanted the front of the truck covered in flames, not quite like Mr.Flames -- lil too wild for me -- but flames all over. Anywho, since then I have looked at more flames schemes than I care to count -- and this is what I want. But I do appreciat the compliments bro, i really do.

Oh man... I know what I said earlier today about the rear flames probably being too much. Now that the edit is done, though, I don't think it's really that bad. I think I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to limit it to the fender and that it would have to wind up over the bed cover to look right. But I don't know... what do you guys think?

It's due in for paint at the end of the month or early next month, right? I think I have an idea that's a combination of both schemes, yet not quite as "cookie-cutter" as some are saying the edit is. Let me see what I can do...

Basically any low-end animated image will be a .gif file. The smilies and user tags that have been showing up lately are .gif's too, but their file size is small enough that it's not an issue. This .gif, although smaller in area than your signature, has a larger file size and would just take the page longer to load up. If we allowed everyone to use them, the load speed for any page would take a hit.

I apreciate the offer man -- I make take you up on it once re-assembly begins. Not much left to do at this point other than yank the motor and tranny out and finish pulling the interior. I think we should have a re-assembly meet sometime in May in my neck of the woods. I'll have to run it by Jeremy and see.
BTW, what are the specs on the new project as it sits now?
And m3gumpy, about the front end, I got everything from AIM. The sell the grille and bumper and have yet to see the combo anywhere else.

A re-assembly meet sounds good to me. I picked the truck up last weekend from a Navy guy up in Gloucester, Va. Its' a 94'GMC ECSB. It has a mild 2/4 drop with a fiberglass rollpan molded onto the rear. He had tried to shave the doorhandles and mirrors also and fugged it all up. Other than that the body is PERFECT! No rust, no door dings, nothing but pure straight virgin sheetmetal. The first thing I plan to do is fix his fuggups and shave EVERYTHING else. Then I think I'll spray it a simple black over silver two tone, similar to how it is now except all the blue will be black. The interior is pretty good. All the interior panels are perfect except for the door panels. He had put some APC racing seats in it that weren't too comfortable to me, so I snatched them out Sat. and put a set of 02' Silverado seats with integrated seat belts in it. As far as the interior goes.....I'm thinking lots of fiberglass and black paint. And of course, a killer sound system. The drivetrain is mostly stock except for a couple of bolt ons. (TB spacer, K&N filter, LT headers, Hi flow cat, and a flowmaster muffler. The best part of all....I drove it home for $1600!
Sorry for the book....I got carried away! Give me a call sometime. I can't divulge all my plans up here on FSC!

Yeah, I am going down the first weekend in May to get started and hopefull finish smoothing the firewall. I want the firewall to be a symmetrical as possible. The problem is going to be that indention for the wiper motor and how that ridge below the cowl slopes from left to right. I really don't want to cut it all out and re fabricate it. I think I am just going box it in. BUT smart me forgot to mark where the f'n distributor would hit the firewall...oh well....Measure twice, weld once.

alright, here are some updates. I took a three day weekend to get some stuff accomplished SSBT. Only pics I took are of the metalwork so enjoy. I spent a majotity of the day staring at the opening where my wipers once were trying like hell to figure out what would be the best was to cover that hole up w/o itr looking tacky. I finally gave up, grabbed a shower and got a couple drinks in me and then the creative juices started flowing.
What we started with.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/stesidebowtie/truck%20pics/IMG_2129.jpg
The solution:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/stesidebowtie/truck%20pics/IMG_2128.jpg
and with metal...

tacked up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/stesidebowtie/truck%20pics/IMG_2132.jpg
finiched out...for the most part. Still gonna need some body filler to make it perfect.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/stesidebowtie/truck%20pics/IMG_2135.jpg
I also plugged some other hole, ground the drip holes smooth and some other things in the firewall. It is pretty much done. All I have to do now is the cab seams, strip it and its off to paint.

#1, photobucket suck donkey balls. I have been trying for a phucking hour to upload nine pics!!!
Anyway. Little bit of work to done this weekend. I got the cab seams along the backside of the cab filled in. Pretty much ready to be stripped and filler to be applied. In the long seams, I could have sworn I had them sitting more flush than I did, but when I got to grinding and finishing it out, I saw that they sat "in" a bit. I was trying to get away from using as little body filler as possible....win some, lose some.

Next time I get down to NC, I'll be re doing the nocthes for the tie rods up front. Clean and degrease and then under coat the front part of the frame. THEN, next trip I plan to strip it and get it in sealer for the painter. Speaking of paint. I thinking about going with just the pearl white bas and no flames....keep it clean I guess. I don't know, not sold on it yet. Just giving it sonme thought. I just don't want the flame job done and it become "old" to me in the future, or "out of style" If flames can go out of style. :dunno:

.030 is all I use.
HAVE TO, HAVE TO take your time on sheet metal. I ran a set of tacks down one side of the filler piece, then move to the other side of the truck and do the same. Then I'd find something else to get into while everything cooled. I was very worried about warping ****. I'll try and upload some pics of some of the stuff/crap in our shop. Our shop is a diasaster, my dad and brother can make a mess out of anything. Right now, my brother parks his Kit cobra in there, hiss shell of a 66 fastback is in there (turned into more of a storeage bin than enything else) and an 1950's irrigation motor my dad is trying to get running again. My grandfather bought it new in the 50's. My dad says we need a bigger shop. I just laugh at him and and say you know we'd fill up a bigger shop with more junk like we have this one..... I will probably keep the flames, it may just put the paint job on hold due to $$$. I have talked to one guy here in MD that does some aweseome work, some of which had been on show at the Carquest World of Wheels show when it use to come to DC. Without having the truck in front of him (I did show him pics) he quoted me $6-$10k depending on the amount of body work. THe truck is straight as an arrow though, no dents not even a door ding anywhere. So I am hoping in the $8k range....we'll see. I am also checking on a lead in NC for paint. I was hoping to be in paint by the end of summer, but it may be more like end of winter. We'll see.

I'd rather just get it done, its what I want. I am afraid that if I just went with the pearl for now I would "live" with it and never do the flames. The wife and I are about to refinance the house b/c our variable rate kicks in in April next year. I did the variable thing b/c I'd hoped to be out of MD by now. I'll prolly take some cash out. 5-10k won't affect payments too bad on a 30 yr mortagage anyway. I know it ain't the smartest thing to do. I had the money, but stuff comes up sometimes, ya know?

something about that plain white truck I like. The first guy I have talked to says he uses all top of the line ppg. Just talking to him you can tell he is perfectionest. He will be starting from scratch, fresh sheet metal all the way to six coats of clear taht will be wet sanded and polished. Does that help explain why he is high? don't read it wrong, I am not being smart. Just trying to clarify what is being done.

something about that plain white truck I like.
Yeah I know man. Maybe its not high considering what he is doing cause I havent priced a paint job lately but I couldnt bring myself to spend so much on just paint.IMO But both trucks look real good but Im not fond of that style flame on the 2nd. Your chops are much better.
And what kind of pearl would you get? There are the pearls that look kinda gold-yellowish in the light like a cadillac or the silver pearl like on some Lexus?

More like the cadillacs -- What I have now is close to it, but not quite.

plain white for now IMO.
flames are really easy to mess up IMO.. that truck that doug just quoted, they look too bubbly to me. Maybe I am too picky.

Exactly, not the same as Chuggs......looks the same if you look real quick because of the color combo.:aniteef:

Chuggs chop and that truck should not even be compared. Chugs chop makes that truck look like a 3rd grade art project :read: (no offense to the owner, I am sure he likes it). I did alot of thinking yesterday and have decided to take my time and take the truck as far as I can take it minus paint. Get as many of the accessories as I can in the meantime. The cash out refinance (thanks Doug) is just a bad idea all around. Its not like it will happen in the next week or two anyway. I stress myself out way too much sometimes. I like having a well mapped out plan is all. The truck will be painted complete with flames....Its the only way I'll be happy.
 it doesn't matter how long it takes....as long as you are happy with the outcome.

Yep I drive, April-June is a busy time of year for me. ALOT of birthdays & anniversaries. I am heading down the weekend of the 4th to get some stuff accomplished. Trust me, no one wants to see more progress than me. Not to mention a trip to NC now costs me about 140-200 bucks. Not something I want to more than once every month or two. I have started taking time off work to make long weeknds to allow more lump sum time on the truck and fewer trips. Believe it or not, it works out better. I don't have to stop and restart something next time down.

Thanks guys. Its been that way from day one. Lived in Maryland the entire time, had to got to NC to do anything. and yes, it does suck...Took me a year to get the air ride the way I want it. I plan on soon being relocated back to NC so progress & pics should come more frequently. I am so close to being ready for paint I can almost smell the fumes.

I can't paint and I'll admit it. Byt everything else on the truck is done by me and it is rewarding. I am getting frustrated though. I want to be able to work on it more, hell I want the thing painted now!! Thoroughly frustrated to say the least. It is so close to being put back tohether, buy the 300+ mile between me and my truck KILLS me. Part of it is these damn gas prices. I can remember when I would make it down to NC twice a month. Now I am lucky to make it once a month. Anyone else get frustrated because the timeline you want never turns out like you want it to?

Got a little work done this weekend. Re-nocthed for the tie rods because I was having some clearance issues before......and this just looks cleaner. I also ran new air line for all my guages because I am moving them to the pillar, organized the wiring and loomed everything together. Before I had chit running every which way but together.
Anyway, on with the pics.

Here are the last pics until I take it to paint.
This is the bay of our shop where I have done all the work on this truck starting with the 4-6 static looooooong time ago. That is a 66 mustang fastback in the background. Been sitting that way for about 5 years. It is my brothers and hopefully he'll get the thing back together one day.

Thats it fellas. All I really have left to do is strip the front part of the frame, degrease it and paint it.
Oh, BTW I noticed I had a little rust coming through my seams I had welded up, do ya'll think I should cut these out and redo them? What can I do differently to make this not happen?

good deal, maybe I should have left it to the body man to do. What should I use as a body filler? Does the type of body filler need to be determined my tha tyoe of piant used? Is there anything particular about body filler? When I redo them, I may just go ahead and mud them up and primer them.
