I have finaly collected most of the parts I needed to start the SAS on my 92 ECSB Chevy. This next week I will be getting my springs in along with all the stuff for my hydro steering. Tomorrow I'm going to order my detriot lockers and 4.56s front and rear. it should be 9" in front and 8" in the back.
What I would like to have done still Is get the bed sprayed w/ rhino liner(or the like), I would also like the have the quarter panels rhino lined. Then I need a new motor. The list goes on with odds and ends, but It will slowly come along.
This is the list of stuff I have so far...
78 dana 60 kingpin front.
87 dana 70 rear.
ORU SAS kit +6" in spring length.
16x10 cast black procomp rims.
Kingpin rebuild kit.
New pads/ shoes for the brakes.
new ujoints for the axle shafts.
37x13.50 mickey thompson Baja Claws.
4.56s Front & Rear.
Detriot lockers F/R.
Hydro steering stuff.
Draglink.
Steering arm.
Tie rods.
Brake lines.
Hub Bearings.
Ubots and Ubolt plates.
Ujoint rear axle.
List of stuff I still need...
Front driveline.
Shocks.
Time, time, time and more time.
I know I'm forgetting a few things but oh well...
BTW the stock gears and carriers out of the front and rear axles need to go. The D60 front has/had 4.10 I think 50+ shipping is fair. The D70 Rear has/had 3.73s 50+ shipping. The stock 3.73 from the 10 bolt rear and front, I need to get rid of also. I need some room here in my shop, If there is anything you need PM me I may have it.

All my hydro assit stuff came in today(i'll get pics later). How ever I need to go and get a rebuild kit for the PS gear box/ find and rebuild a 2wd gear box so I can get a drop pitman arm.
I'm still waiting on my springs. A frind of mine is going to show/ teach me how to set gears. So I can get the rear D70 in place(I may even do a shackle flip). Then I need to remove the BL and ALL spacers. I still need to clean out the in part of the axle B4 I set the gears and set in new seals. So I hoping for a productive week end.

Crap, I ran into a little snag. when I ordered my springs I told the guy go head and run my card. So this intire time I thought I prepaid and come to find out they wherent. I guess the guy didnt do it. So now I have to wait till my next pay check to get them.
And I dont get paid untill the 15. Oh well looks like it will only slow me for 2 weeks. I am going to however get EVERYTHING ready for when the spring get here I can just get everything mounted.

Well I didnt get what I planed done. maby next week end, however since I ran into a few snags. I'll go ahead a tear into my PS gear box and rebuild and drill for the hydro assist. I did get the knuckles back on tho(yay) everything is painted and awaiting gears and spring. I also got all my tie rodends for the crossover and tierod.
I was thinking hiems untill I found out they are illegal on the highway. I'm sure I could get away with it, But I'm not going to take the chance. The cops around here do cheak for illegal Mods. So 3/4" tie rods will do.

I should have asked but I didnt have the time. There is alot of hearsay on many forums. But I think asking a local cop would be you best bet. I was told be a couple guys, "its do to the fact that they can fail at any give time". But so can a tierod end so I really dont know.
But its just a local thing here(as far as I know), You might beable to run 'em where you are.

It would be a state thing, as versus a local thing.
I would as the state inspection station. If they pass, or can't find legislation that specifically says you can't, then rock it.

I am involved with the SAE Mini Baja program at school and we are using heims for all of our suspension joints. Granted it is a go-kart that will never see more than 35mph vs a FSC, but we are using heims for our control arm pivots.
I know that they have considerable strength in tensile loading so I don't see what the problem is. The ball popping out of the outer shell would be the only failure point I could see happening. But even that would only be with a very large shear load.
Oh well, kinda like other bs laws everyone has to deal with.

Talk about straped for time to work on chit. Between striping the rest of the truck down for the buyer of my lift, and trying to get both front and rear axles together. I still have to run outa town to get the metal I need to make the tierod, 3/8" should be good enough. I still need to get a rebuild kit for the PS gear box, and 2wd sector shaft for the Gear box. Need to drill it and tap it. Need to get pay cause I want my damned springs. And to top it all of I'm flat broke after all off this...

Can you buy complete sas kits online that includes everything but the axels...?
TAWL_BOY
03-25-2008, 12:41 PM
Not really. Buying a "new" axle would be big bucks. Start lookin' on classifieds and junk yards.
I got lucky and found a 78HP D60 for $700 and I sold it a year later for $1600 but I had rotated the pinion 18*, 5.13 gears and it had a hydro assist ram.

Can you buy complete sas kits online that includes everything but the axels...?
Kind of...
you can go with either ORU(pricey but good) or SKY(little less complete but cheaper price) SAS shackle kit. The ORU came with everything but, shocks, springs, steering componets, and axles.
But everything else listed you can get from them, but its going to cost you. Alot of stuff I Pieced together.
BTW springs are on there way, I still want to double cheak everything b4 I finish weld everything. I'm hoping by the end of the month I'll have the springs mounted and the gears in the axles so I can get them under the truck.

Rod ends, aka heims (misnomer), are not illegal on the road in CA.
A good rod end is leaps and bounds ahead of the strength of a similarly sized tie-rod end. There are plenty of terrible $7.50 3/" 1 peice rod ends out there you should avoid, however a good 3 peice like an FK or even a QA1 for the limited misalignment oyu need in steering is a good choice.

Can get pics this weekend. It consists of 2 1/2" OD 1/4" wall tubing that we cut into 2 18" pieces which was welded to 3/16" plate steel 5" x 8" one one side of each tube. Visual looks like an overkill mortal shell firework tube. Then we machined 2 1/8" solid roll down to 2" OD on the ends and 1" in the center. This piece slipped in the 2 tubes. Placed it all on the inside of the frame and butted the plate up to the frame rail, centered the turned down section over the driveshaft for a lil more clearance. I'll get you a pic and you can understand it a bit better.

looks good man, can't wait to see it with the 37's on, i just bought a truck very similiar to yours once your done. once i get another vehicle and more money i want to redo a lot of the SAS swap and do 4 link front and rear. hardest part is the guy i bought it from didn't know exactly what parts were what and the mounts are kinda sketchy...

All thats left is the Shock hoops, shocks, front driveline, Finsh welding the front bumper mounts, and remount the rear bumper. I should have the truck 99-100% complete in the next month or so. It really depends on money right now.
