Anyone know what the stock rear end in a 97 chevy is?? Ive got the 5.7 vortec and I know the gears are 3.42 and its got 10 bolts holding the cover on. Reason I'm asking is I'm trying to buy a Eaton posi. Is the 8.875in or 7.5in the diameter of the differential carrier? Also is this a job an average do it yourselfer can do?

i see your from san marcos...im going to school down there right know...if you know how to deal with gears and things like that, then i say go for it...if you want a good shop i suggest austin drive train off of 183...that were i went and got my eaton put in...also you may want to look into a tru-trac...both are great units but the eaton has clutches that will wear out over time and the tru trac is gear driven and never has to have anything redone on it...either way im very pleased with my eaton but when its time for me to get gears i think im going to swap the eaton for a tru-trac

about how much should I expect to pay for them to install a new differential?

i think it cost me around $600 for them to install it...that includes the eaton lsd and labor...they had it done in one day..
