My brother is considering buying a 99+ 3/4 ton 2wd because it would be cheaper than a 4x4. He would want to do a SFA swap on it. I know we would need a transfer case but one of my questions is whether or not the transmission would need to be changed to mount like a 205 up to it. Also would we need to change the steering box? I remember heavychevy saying something about using a different steering box for something or another. Basically is there anything unusual we would be up against in a project like this since it would be on a 2wd? Thanks

no you should be fine, the steering box swap your thinkin of is for old 4x4's who want to do crossover and they have to use a 2wd box. but the stock steering box on that should be good. transmission wont have to be changed, i can't name an exact place that will have an adapter but most likely they are out there.

Advance Adapters. :read:
www.advanceadapters.com
Look under "Online Catalog" then "GM Fullsize Trucks."

no adapters needed man , doing it to a 2x4 is the way to go man , leave the trans just as it sits and put a divorced case behind it , all you would need is a short driveshaft to connect them , there are several divorced 205s on e bay , you could get a passenger side dropp and use a gm front axle or get a drivers side drop and use a ford axle , the 2x4 steering box will be just what you need

Thanks Heavychevy...I was really wanting to hear from you. Also forgive my ignorance, but what about these??

I know you say I'll only need a driveshaft, but I was just wondering about these.

is the truck short bed or long?? just asking because I wondered if there would be enough room (length) to run a divorced Tcase with a short box.

Well he doesn't have one yet. He is considering getting one if he can find one for the right price--prolly ex-cab short bed.

the first link you put up is just the adapter and that guy has no idea what he is talking about becouse that adapter will not fit any auto trans , that adapter looks like is mates to a 350 turbo , a 400 turbo and a 700r4 doesnt have 4 holes they have 6 , im not sure how the second link you put up would work or not , im not sure if that shaft would fit into a newer trans or not , im not even sure what trans are in the new trucks , a divorced case will fit into a short bed , it will have plenty of room if he gets an exstended cab

another new guy question....would I have to use the divorced case since it is 2wd?
btw...this is mostly for future reference, but I greatly appreciate the input.

You wouldnt have to but then youd have to pull off the tailshaft housing and use an adapter to go from the back of the trans to the transfer case. You *might* also have to change the output shaft becasue the 4wd version might be shorter. Im not sure on that one though. Correct me if Im wrong. It would just be easier to use a divorced case. The nice thing about divorced is that it puts the case a little bit further back and therefore alleviates front driveshaft angles.
The 92-98 3/4 and 1 tons have 4L80e trans which is basically an elctronic overdrive Turbo 400.

yeah it will probably be easier to just go with a divorced t-case. new 3/4 and 1 ton with the 8.1 and dmax have the allison transmission.
