Well I took the plunge and shaved my roofrack today. I went out to a professional auto body suppy store and bought some self adhesive side body molding for $50.00. The brand was ProtecaTrim and is almost an exact match for the molding that is already on the roof.

The roofrack came off easy, it's held on my 10 torx head screws.

I filled in the screw holes with some silicone sealant. I like to use 3M 5200 Marine sealant, if it's good enough for a boat, then it should be good enough to seal my truck.

I then cut the moulding to length and lined it up over the holes, marking where they were. I had to counter sink the molding with a drill so that the molding would fit flush over the holes.

I cleaned off the paint surface with rubbing alcohol and applied the molding on. It comes with 3M double sided tape already attatched to it.

Did you have to remove the headliner to remove the roof rack. I've been told by 2 body shops that they have to remove the liner to get the rack off. Their not trying to stiff me are they?
Thanks, Larry

I don't know about old body styles but on the new bodys, you don't need to.

When removing the roof rack for a 2003 Tahoe: There are four 10mm torx screws on the inside of each rail. Do these screws just hold on the outside cover and the remainder are inside once you remove the covers? Appreciate the help.

The screws that you see on the bases are all that you need to remove.

I thought about doing this but then saw on KBB.com that your vehicle loses value when you do this. That is just me though, always thinking about $$$.

I also have a 99 Tahoe. Didn't want you guys to think I had a roofrack on my Silverado.

Yeah i had a 2000 blazer 4 door, lowered on 22" spinners before i got my current vehicle which is a 99 Tahoe LT on 24'z and that is exactly what i did for my roof rack. The only screws you have to worry bout is the ones that are in the bases of the rack. I then siliconed the holes up and did exactly what Black did and it looked awesome. I mean it was a definite sturdy fix and cost a hell of alot less than payin someone to weld up those holes, which would entail you takin the headliner out and all that, i mean i got alot of compliments on it and i am bout to do the same to my Tahoe. But as far as loosing value Jsiminsk, i dont kno bout the validity of that. I mean it might but i kno when you do a Blue Book value on the internet it juss asks if it has Steprails and LT package, i dont remember seeing one for Roof Rack, but i mean its really not gonna matter, cause whoever buys it or wants to buy it, if they need the rack then obviously that isnt the one for them and for someone that would never use it, then it is perfect. I dont see hardly anyone using their roofracks here in Florida, i dunno though.

I am currently working on mine, I removed rack yesterday and have grinded the nut base on my yukon to be flush or level to the roof, I am going to fill in with silicone and top it off with some fiberglass in each hole, then I will just spot paint myself.

I know this is old but I tried to do this on my suv and all i doo is twist the torx bit or break it. Did yall have the same problem or do I just have cheap tools?

Just grind it off, put some tape around area so you wont over grind.. also make sure you dont alow too much heat sparks to get on paint or else you will damage the clear coat, and it will form rust spots..
