I just got off the phone with my local GMC dealer. I called them about getting a locking diff installed since my truck did not come with one from the factory :(
The guy on the phone said that the price to have a GM factory locker installed (Eaton G80 I believe) was over a grand as far as he could remember.
I asked him if he could install a locker if I could get my hands on one, he said he would have no problem doing it... for about $300 in labor.

(I am looking to have a Auburn Pro series diff installed)

so my question is:
1) is $1000 less than or greater than a (new locker + labor)
2) is it really worth it for the $$$
3) are their any other options other than remaining a one-wheeler-peeler

I will be ordering my eaton posi unit tomorrow for $289.00
If you want in on this let me know, I did the exact same thing you did with the dealership.
The eatons are rebuidable.:smokin:

You can get an eaton for about $300 + about $250 to install at a local speed shop. You can also do a gear swap at the same time.

The factory LSD sucks!

1. i would say greater than. $300 labor doesnt' sound too bad though.
2. thats up to you ;)
3. detroit ez locker or powertrax. i've heard good and bad things about the powertrax. nothing about the detroit.

If you do a search for some of the posts by James B. he has some very informative posts about the differences between the G80 (crappy locker) and the Eaton(limited slip). I have the Eaton positive traction unit and I love it, it doesn't get easy use and I also run drag radials on it and drive hard everyday and I have seen no problems with it at all. I would recommend it to anyone. I got mine for around $350 so the $289 price is excellent and I only paid $125 on my install so to me the $300 sounds steep, mine was also including Fluids and installing gears also.

If you are thinking about doing the Eaton then definetly do a search for them in the Performance and the Rev it up Forums, because there is some excellent information that would tell you much more about them than I can even start to. It also shows James B.'s factory G80 when it crapped out on him and he tells about his Eaton. The factory G80 seems to enguage some times and sometimes it won't but the Eaton that I have works flawlessly and is working great on some of the other guys on here's high HP motors.

1) I already have the 3.73 gears, got that from the factory :)
2) I think I will talk to the guy in the service shop at the dealership where I bought my truck. They have been pretty cool about all the mods I have done so far (headers + intake + exhaust + hpp3 + suspension, + etc.,)

i also have an eaton posi unit, paid 300 for it and my install was 145.. that was to put in the eaton and new gears. I love my unit.. have no problems to say about it. :D

Does your install price include the new bearings that will be needed? If not then go to somewhere else besides a dealer.

Just an FYI bt G80 is Gm's rpo code for ANY traction aiding differential whether it b the locker like I have in my 2500 or the limited slip like I have I my 87 SS, same code either way.

the main problem here where I live is there are not many shops around that do that kind of work, or that I trust to do work on my truck
