View Full Version : Modified stock intake w/ram air--works!

After extensive research on intake systems for my 2000 model 4.8l, I come to the conclusion that UPD and K&N rule at the top. I heard that the UPD gets in a little more air due to the larger surface area on the filter that is provided with the system, which is by the way from K&N. So-- I bought the K&N filter by itself (one that UPD uses) and replaced my stock one. Afterwards I took off my stock intake tube and cut off the extra air holding places(one hangs down in between the moter and batery / the other floats over the fan shroud.). Then I used ChemWeld plastic adhesive and patched the holes nicely with the plastic I cut off. Now I have a straight shot tube just like volant, k n, upd. To finish up I took the plate that the airbox sits on and cut a 4" hole in the bottom. Did the same thing with the airbox. Then I placed a metal plate on the outside of the airbox and sealed (roofing caulk)it so air wouldn't be pulled through the fender like it is supposed to. I went to Lowes and picked up flexible aluminum 4" duct tube and ran it from where my fog lights used to be up through the bottom of the airbox. I folded the flaps back holding it in place and sealed it also with roofing chalk.

Now I get a straight ram shot of air from my fog lamp hole through a filter with large surface area into the intake with no restrictions.

disadvantage-- pick up dust off the road--cure K&N filter cover placed over the end of the tube thats in the fog lamp hole.

advantages- $45 for filter $15 at Lowes --thats it!
also looks stock under the hood
I now get ram air jammed in and it works better than the gen2 K&N I had on my other 2000 model 5.3liter z71

not dynoed- but I know it works just by driving
I feel like the mass air flow sensor is holding me back. But thats nothing a HPP3 and Granetelli sensor can't fix next week..........

What do ya think about this cheap but awesome setup?
:D

sounds neat...

but I really wish that you had some kind of hard data...even a minor difference would be nice for that kind of money....

Sounds like you did a good job though does it sound any different?

Have you got the part number for the filter you used? I am about to do something similiar but I'm not going to go down to the fog light hole because I would probably end up trying to suck up the contents of a large water hole the first time I went offroading.

don't you run the risk of sucking up water?
