View Full Version : G-Tech Testing (In both directions!)
GMC K1500 SC

I've been testing my quater mile in one direction thinking it was pretty level...so I thought!
Today before getting to work I thought I'd test in going the other direction...here are the results:
Also put the tailgate down on this run. Alt is 1600 feet above sea level. 4HI Launch first 30mph then 2WD.
3.73 gears on 32" 285/75R16 tires. 5200lbs
North to South run: 13.65 @103.5 MPH!
South to North run: 13.94 @99.8 MPH (gate was up)
Average: 13.79 @101.65 (new best time!)
Average/Corrected Sea Level: 13.54 @103.5 MPH
North to South run 0-60mph 5.05 seconds!
South to North run 0-60mph 5.28 seconds
Average 5.16 seconds! (new best time!)
Corrected Sea Level... 5.09 seconds!
CONCLUSION: If your running a g-tech you need to test in both directions in the same conditions...no matter how level it looks!!! You may be faster or slower depending depending on which side the angle favors you.
Remember when I was running low 15's at the track and with my g-tech with 8psi of boost? Here are the mods I've done since then to get where I am today:
Insulated Water Injection Tank
Installed dual 3" cats to 4" exhaust system
Installed Crane Cams LX91 coil
Replace spark plugs... NGK TR6 gapped 35ths
Install Dual elec fans
Installed Procomp rear bars (+40lbs)
Took off rear bumper (-67lbs)
Clean GMAF Sensor
Replaced Fuel Regulator, inside intake
Match Ported BBK TBI 80mm to adapter plate and intake
Biggest improvment came from the bigger exhaust system by far! Back Pressure was 6psi...now around .5 to 1.0psi at WOT 5,300rpms
Per Smokemup.com here is what they say my HP is.
http://www.smokemup.com/utilities/calc.cfm
Your car weighs about 5200 pounds and has a 1/4 mile time of 13.79 seconds, 22% drivetrain loss. That calculates to approximately 391.92 HP at the wheels, and about 502.46 HP at the flywheel. Sea Level Time would be even more :)

Also remember g-tech are not that accurate compared to real track times...I ran both my g-tech and ran the 1/4 mile down at the Fontana Calif. Speedway:
Compared to my 14.47@92.26 run at the track the g-tech was off by .4 and 8mph to my favor!
G-tech is still a good tool for measuring performance gains and if you keep good records of your times

Did you get HP readings from your G-tech ?
I have a very similar built truck, maybe a few differences, but have not got a chance to get the truck on some good pavement yet to test it. I am in Indiana (Winter sucks). I have taken some 1/4 mile times on my gtech and been around 13.70s ( tested both directions as you), I still get some tire spin if I dont get it off the line just right. Do you have any detonation problems? I am at 8.5 psi and with the h2O & have had no problems, How much water are you injecting & when. Sorry for all the questions but it's great to see Im not the only one who used a brick to make a go-fast toy. What kind & where did you get your ladder bars?
Thanks

Never check the HP on the g-tech.
Also the g-tech times will be off if your truck raises the front end up very much...sounds like you are in the low 14's as my g-tech was .4 off at the actual track.
Best to run a 60/40 mix of distilled water and alk. I get mine at homedepot at $9 a gallon.
No pinging with 8-9psi of boost...I also have a Crane Cams Ign with boost retard...only time I use it is in summer city driving.
I use the procomp bars...I can get them for anyone at $320 plus shipping.
Yes it's actually more fun blowing away someone in a big bad truck than a small fast car...I see a lot of open mouths :wow:
Have you checked out my webpage?? Do you have one??? I've also got a lot of movies of my truck racing in the movies section...1/4 mile runs are in the misc movie icon section.

Thanks for the G-tech info, I dont have a web page yet, im still trying to get good digital pictures of the truck and figure out how to post them, I will check out your web site.
Sounds like were running almost identical setups with different parts. I will get with you on the bars, right now I am putting rear discs on the truck along with a floor shifter / console. Wife says I have spent this months allowance. Its almost April though.
I will get with you on the bars soon.

Ken one more question, Your list said you replaced your fuel regulator, what did you use, I found a really sweet boost sensitive regulator from aeromotive that I have been looking at. Also have you changed the fuel pump in your truck, I am using a pump from a grand national, along with the longest strainer I could get.
Just Curious

Running the stock fuel pump with an additional booster pump at the front fuel filter (came with the vortech Supercharger setup) Also running an 8N1 FMU (older vortech model) which is like a fuel reg for the additional pump...only kicks in when under boost (blocks some of the returning fuel to the tank.

Well I sold the race tech. unit...to hard to use...going to get the Tazzo unit which is real easy to use and is still better than a g-tech unit!

Ken, you will love the Tazzo...mine works awesome, its so much easier to use (no leveling, which is where guys really get their times screwed up) and the best feature in my mind, the 60 foot times.Overall, it seems to be a better quality unit, that optional mount is really solid, thing must weigh five pounds!!
I don't race my silverado, its stock and slow, but I did use it on my big block GS...figured I had a traction problem but never dreamed 2.6's!!LOL Thats a different story...
Your truck is pretty wild. I was thinking of supercharging my 97 but right now its my daily driver...

I never thought I'd SC mine...until I found a deal on ebay for $1200 off a 98 Tahoe with 6K miles on the unit :)
I've got 30K on the SC setup and 125K total on the truck and going strong....I did have to go through the tranny more than I would like to have :) Right now the tranny can handle up to 700hp....I know the rear end is the weak link now...but I don't have any traction so hooking up never happens unless I launch in 4HI then only 50% of the power is going to each diff....same power through the tranny and transfercase...reason I have good 60 foot times :)

Check this link out for all my tranny mods....does not show the full transgo shift kit or 96 Corvette TC...also add a B&M alum. 3+ quart oil pan which further stiffens up the tranny.

I've notice that it varies from unit to unit...also car to car and tuck to truck...it is more prone to being off on faster vehicles as the g-tech can't compensate for vehicle lift as does the Tazzo.

I can tell you guys how much this has helped in my testing and getting my truck to run low 14's....don't waste your money on a g-tech...this is the best unit out there for the price!
As I mentioned before I'm now a dealer for Tazzo performance meters...if anyone is interested I can still save you $10 on the cost per there webpage!

how do you determine the true horsepower from the gtech?

You don't. Best to use a dyno if you want the ture info...gtech and tazzo is used mostly to guage any performance increase from mods.

Anyone know the accuracy of TTS Datamaster's software quarter mile and Dyno? I assume that the Dyno feature isnt real accurate, but since it is going through the trucks computer I'd imagine the 1/4 mile would be pretty accurate (assuming your tires and gears match your DRAC module).
I have the program, I just have to order the ALDL cable, and I barely have money for food for the next 2 weeks, much less stuff just to test performance. Now i'd eat Ramen noodles for a month for a little more horsepower, but then I need gas money too (12.9mpg on my last tank... with a 3 hour trip on the highway... and I am about to install an adj. fuel pressure regulator!)
