they are a chain, and chains always bow to customer pressure. go back to the store, tell the manager that you want the phone number to the district or regional manager to discuss the situation with them. if he doesn't give in right then, call the dm and tell them you purchased the starter from them, they acknowledge it and yet they insist on insulting your intelligence by inferring that you cannot keep track of a simple reciept when they demanded to have your phone number and other personal data for warranty tracking in the computer, which now doesn't seem able to bring up your information. make sure you tell them some story about downtime, having to carpool with the wife, not being able to get your truck started to get the kids to school, etc. don't blow it out of proportion, though. if the dm seems on the fence or not willing to budge, demand that he locate the info in the computer by name or address. they store warranty info in a pool by zip code or area code.
if you have a canceled check or cc statement from the purchase, that will be enough to force the dm to approve the warranty. if all else fails, tell the dm that you feel the need to discuss it with a bbb representative that way the resolution will be fair and impartial (they will get nailed and you will get a refund on your starter).
and next time, shop at pep boys :read:
