Compressor On and Off Switch?

How many have an on and off switch hooked up to your compressors? I do and I keep frying the switches. :cussing:

Yes it is relayed. But this one is only 25 amps. Damn, where can i get a 50amp one? Thanks!!!

25 amps??? What does your compressor pull for maximum amperage?? Geez...that's high.:( What guage wire are you running to that thing?

Here is what I got....

50 amp switch....don't remember where I got it....
relay setup
thomas 1/3 horse compressor located far back near hitch.
8 guage power wire with inline 30amp fuse....

Works good for me....no issues yet...

If you're running a relay to do the switching, why do you need such a high amperage switch? Wouldn't the "line voltage" only run thru the relay?

I talked to his installer today, and something sounds really strange. He used two pressure switches, with two relays. The switch in question should only be seeing very small amperage... as in like milli amps. The current needed to trip a small relay is very minute.
The installer swears the relays are hooked up right, but it sounds to me like they are wrong, and the current is flowing thru the switch that keeps burning out. 2 viair 450's will kill a 25 amp switch.

OK, here is everything I know. I don’t know now much or anything about electrical. The compressors are hooked up to 2 relays. I have 2 Viair 450 compressors. This is about the 3rd switch that has done this. I first I had a 6amp switch hooked up and the same thing happen. What has happen is the entire rear of the switch has melted and the prongs have moved, look at pics in the link below. Also because the wires are pushed back in there where the have touch they have melted together (the black and green wire in first pic). After melting the 6amp switch 2 times I got the 20-25 amp switch (I am not exactly sure what it is, 20 or 25). I got the higher one thinking it would be able to take the load. Now these switches I can use for about 2 weeks then they go out. Like the one pictured I have been using it for about 2 weeks with no problems until today. The wire to the switch is 14 gauge and the wires from the battery to the compressor is 10 gauge.

it has a 10 gauge coming from the batter going to the inlet on the relay on each one, then 10g going to the pressure switches from the power outlet on the relay, then a 14 gauge wire coming from the relay to the switch then a 14 gauge power going to the switch.. i can't figure out for the life in me why this is happening.... bad gound?? maybe a wire grounded.. but then the whole wire would have went up in smoke.. i have never had a problem like this... this shouldn't be happening those relay run off so little power i can figure it out and it is bugging me.... :devil: :devil: :devil: :(

instead of running hot to the switch just have the groung going to the switch were all the switch is doing is grounding it then it should be fine,:D
