View Full Version : Living with a lowered truck

Tried searching for this, no luck.

Been thinking of getting a new truck, and of course lowering it.
This will be a semi-regular daily driver (plan to commute on a motorcycle whenever possible) and maybe towing a boat on occasion. I like the look of a 4/6, but wondered just how useful it is. I dont want to do away with the usefulness of a truck, although I recognize that lowering reduces it some. I plan to tote a bike or two, as well as occasional runs to the hardware store for whatever project needs working on. And as we all know, the odd help the buddy move etc.

So, what sort of issues come up with lowered trucks?
Speed bumps really an issue? Angled driveways, etc etc.

Dont have a truck at hand, so with say a 4/6 or 2/4 drop, whats the ground clearance?

Thanks.

oops, just realized this would probably be best in General.

I have a 4/6 on my '96 X-cab. Love it! Drive it every day in all kinds of weather. I tow and haul everything w/ it too. I would strongly suggest helper bags for the rear. I have them and can carry/tow anything I want. Also driving w/ a 4/6 is no problem, the first week you'll find out what you have to look out for as far as approach angles for some certain driveway approns, but other than that a 4/6 is no different than a stock height truck! Do the 4/6!:rocking:

:word: What he said. The helper bags IMO are a muct if you plan on towing....very worth the extra cash.

I was going to go with a 4/6 on my 98 but I got a pretty good deal on some 3 inch drop coils so for now Im just gonna do a 3/4 and then bags

but as far as a 4/6 Im with CKTA I say go 4/6 with helper bags :read:

im running a 2/4 drop on a SCSB 01.

I wish i had listened to everyone when i was lowering it. I should have done the 4/6 right away.

2/4 drop (or 3/4) is just a temporary satisfaction before you decide to go lower.

Save the money. Do it right the first time. Learn from my mistake. (and many others!).

You will regret 2/4. Low enough to be a hazard, but not enough to be worth while.

its only 2" more inches and you will still have more ground clearance as most midsize cars

If I can live with my truck as a daily driver(with my ride height) than a 4/6 is no problem. I'd go with helper bags like has already been said.

everything that has been said is true, 1 thing to consider though. a 4/6 on a 88-98 bodystyle is quite a bit different from a 4/6 on a new bodystyle. Yes they both are dropped 4/6, but the new body styles have quite a bit more frame hanging down, thus resulting in hanging up more often in steep driveways and speedbumps. I would say a new body style 4/6 is equivalent to a old body style 5/7 as far as ground clearance goes.

And with that said, I drove with a 5/8 on my '91 daily for over 3 years and didn't have a lick of trouble! :rocking: It'll make you a better driver as you'll be more able to spot problems in the pavement as you're driving and be able to avoid them.

There is no other feeling that can match cruising in a slammed truck. Lot's of people have sports cars. Lot's of people have cars that have loud azz systems. But not too many people have the grapefruits to take a perfectly functional truck, cut the frame, and make that bish scrape up cigarette butts left in the road.
Next time someone asks "Why would you do that to a perfectly good truck?" ... reply with... "Nice Volvo. Is that beige?" :D

And as many have said... go as low as you can. If you don't, you'll just cough up the extra bucks to do it later.

I have a 5-8 drop on mine and its been on it since 1993.I have helper bags on the rear and can tow just about anything with it as I can with my z71. The only problems I have had is with things in the middle of the road that are impossible to avoid,(I have replaced the air dam about 8 times)

just bag it first. i went 4/4 on my '64, 5/7 on my '84 and i'm eyeing bag setups for it now. go all out the first time and save yourself some money. if not go 4/6 at minimum:D
