Want to remove that nasty plastic? Well here is my method.

Tools you will need:
Plyers
http://myweb.cableone.net/ta630/syckshyt/FSC/Tech/tool.jpg
Adhesive remover:
http://myweb.cableone.net/ta630/syckshyt/FSC/Tech/spray.jpg
And a towl (for wiping up the excess spray and to save your fingers)

The first step is spraying the trim so that the adheasive will losen up.
http://myweb.cableone.net/ta630/syckshyt/FSC/Tech/step01.jpg

Then I take my plyers (after the spray has set and losened up the adheasive) and carefully grab the trim and get it to peel back. I usually start at one corner and peel downward until I get it started.
http://myweb.cableone.net/ta630/syckshyt/FSC/Tech/step02.jpg

Once you get it to start coming up spray a little more adheasive remover. Keep doing this as you peel.
http://myweb.cableone.net/ta630/syckshyt/FSC/Tech/step03.jpg

Once you get the trim off you will have some adheasive strips left on the truck. Spray them so that they will start to losen.
http://myweb.cableone.net/ta630/syckshyt/FSC/Tech/step04.jpg

Now you can use your thumbs, fingers, or your fingers or thumb wrapped in a towl to work on removing the strips.
http://myweb.cableone.net/ta630/syckshyt/FSC/Tech/step05.jpg

After lots of rubbing you will have the top one off. Take a moment to step back and look and think of how much cleaner your truck will be.
http://myweb.cableone.net/ta630/syckshyt/FSC/Tech/step06.jpg
Then after you get the bottom one off you can look at the finished portion.
http://myweb.cableone.net/ta630/syckshyt/FSC/Tech/step07.jpg

When doing the entire truck you will probally get blisters on your thumbs. So be for warned. And with the larger strips it will of course take longer and use more spray.

Nice instructions but I wouldn't get metal plyers anywhere near my paint. :D

I just used my hands to start pulling it off and to remove the adhesive. It's not hard at all.

If you use needlenose you can carefully get in there without touching the paint. it will start to pull it up enough you can get it with your fingers.

Cool:thumbup: I figured since there are so many questions about it I would post it up.

this is a little bit off topic but,... on an 88' chevy 1500 do you think that there will be a dramatic difference in the color of the paint underneath the trim as oppose to outside the trim (fading that is)

Is it the same for the emblems on the back of the tailgate? I've got the one that says "Chevrolet" in the big letters, with "Blazer and Fuel Injected" on a bar underneath it. Do those come off the same way?

Are you talking about the big metal looking ones or just the decals?

On the Fuel Injected is it thick like the trim would be? If so they should come off the same.

Just another trick I learned is to use fishing line. Spray 3M on the trim. Let it soak. Take the line and use it like a saw behind the trim. Works real well. Then just use the 3M stuff to get the adhesive strip left over after the trim is removed.

If you want to avoid the hassle of trying to get the trim off using pliers
or your fingers, try fishing line. Take and get it started in a corner by
holding it taught and sawing back and forth, work your way down
and across. No harm to the paint and the adhesive strips are exposed
and ready to be attacked by the killer cleaner.

Let your truck sit in the hot sun for a while before you start on this. Makes it a lot easier to remove.
After I removed the side mouldings off my truck I thought it looked vulnerable to *ssholes in parking lots. So I painted the mouldings the same color as my truck and put them back on. it looks awesome and no parking lot door dings.:burn:

If any of you guys have a air drill this is for you. When you get the molding off check the local parts house "in my case orilyies" and see if you can pick up a 3m rubber wheel. you but it directly in your drill and start spinning the paint off. At first the paint will look like its comming off but if you wipe away the glue you will see that it really saves blisters. after finishing the truck use a heavy duty wax to bring the luster that was under the molding to brand new

I did a buddies of mine 03 silverado. the dirt and buildup was bad but 3m makes a pink wax that will work like a champ

I have an aftermarket paintjob on my truck. It was supposed to match the factory color but I doubt that it does.

The only way to fix it if it is discolored would be to paint it... right? Theres no other way is there?

Are you sure they didn't remove and replace the mouldings when it was painted?

Be extremely careful using a heat gun on your paint. It can get too hot faster than you think, and cause your paint to bubble and pop because of the solvent's reaction to the concentrated heat.
Personally blow driers are much safer, kept at a distance of about 5" from the paint. The best bet is to wait for a hot day, and have your truck sit in the sun for a couple hours.:D

If they werent removed at the time of a repaint, as was the case on my passenger side door, the paint will not match and there will be a hard edge. Fortunately, I know a good shop where my door was repainted without the moulding and blended to match:D

I just removed the molding, "4x4" decals, "Chevrolet", and "Silverado" emblems from my '02.

First, I bought a can of "Oops" (very similar to 3M product) and transferred it to a spray bottle. Then I sprayed it on a 'stream' setting into the crack between the body and the molding. I repeated this with the emblems. After a few minutes it was very easy to grab the molding at the ends and peel it right off. LOTS of built-up dirt under there. This truck spent some time on a ranch.

For the decals, I just used a hair dryer and they came off easily.

The nastiest residue came from the emblems. It's a different black material than what is used on the body molding.

For the "Silverado" emblem, I scored a line between the gold "Bowtie" and where the "S" for "Silverado" starts. The scored line followed the angle of the bowtie (just be careful not to hit the paint if you decide to do this. When I peeled off the emblem, I kept pressure on the bowtie and carefully pulled away the "Silverado" part. It cleanly snapped right at the scored line. I ended up with a nice clean gold "bowtie" all by itself on the tailgate. I took a little bit of black touch-up paint to cover the newly exposed edge. Of course, you could always remove the entire emblem, cut away the bowtie, then re-apply. I just didn't want to hassle with re-applying.

For the molding, I quickly developed blisters on both thumbs from rolling off the adhesive. I found my rubber sanding block with a straight edge. It worked perfectly in scraping the adhesive off, yet did not scratch the paint. A hair dryer was helpful here too.

All said and done? Perfect results! No paint discoloration underneath (even black paint with hot and sunny Texas summers!), and no scrapes or any other indications that the decals and molding were ever there.

What about like on my truck where there's a dull chrome trim around the wheel wells? Does that come off in the same manner? Does it leave any sort of remnants? Or do you think it'll look good polished? I haven't found anything to polish it though yet so it's dull from car washes I suppose...thanks everyone

BTW: Anyone else have the tailgate like mine where CHEVROLET is written huge in textured silver stuff all across the back...I kind of like it though...is that just a decal?

Buy the adhesive remover at schucks or something. Ha where some gloves or be patient. I got some nasty blisters on my thumbs from rubbing the left over adhesive. I found that wrapping my thumb with a couple bandaids worked pretty well to rub the adhesive off. Saves your thumbs

I know this thread is old, but I had to answer this one. The hideous chrome trim on the wheel wells just unscrews from the body itself. Look up into the wheel well on the edge right there and you will see the screws. Unscrew all around and take it to the swap meet...or garbage can.:D

All you guys with the hurting thumbs should of went to a parts store who sells 3M stuff because 3M makes a eraser wheel that you can mount in a drill and it takes the tape right off of the truck without hurting the paint. I have used it many of times on my own trucks and a lot of our customers trucks. Just dont try it on plastic cause it will ruin that.
