All right, well I'm finally getting the ball rolling on my system and I'm collecting pieces of it as I find good deals. I'll need plenty of help from you guys because this is my first full system! Anyway, before getting into all that I have a few questions on sound deadener. Yes, thanks very much, I've searched.

1. I know from elsewhere in the custom world asking for a best brand is asking a question to which I'll never find an answer. So I'll ask this: of the various brands, which did you use, and why? Why did you decide against other brands? How do you like it now that it is installed?

2. I won't be building any big competition system; this is all for me. I'm trying to cost-conscious as well. In light of that, do I really need two layers? Some people tell me yes, others say no. Also, do I really need it on the roof?

3. What will I need for install (yes, I know there are different types, just tell me about the type you used.)? Will the carpet fit back into place OK with the added thickness of the deadener?

I appreciate any help y'all can give me. I want to do this right the first time around, so feel free to be harsh with me if I've made some dumb assumptions at the beginning. Thanks.

For the money, i'd go with infinity perfect componants. i've heard many other speakers...and they all pale in comparision.

2. I won't be building any big competition system; this is all for me. I'm trying to cost-conscious as well. In light of that, do I really need two layers? Some people tell me yes, others say no. Also, do I really need it on the roof?

one layer is fine in my opinion, and when i dynomat mine, i wasn't planning on doing the roof.

Carpet will fit fine....at most you may have to do a slight bit of trimming.

remember that you can have the baddest amps/speakers/subs out there....but if you got a crappy amp kit, it'll dork it all up:read:

DemoN pretty much hit the nail on the head. as far as sound damping goes, a lot of guys on various car audio forums are using a product called second skin. (http://www.secondskinaudio.com/) i don't know a lot about it, but it's worth looking into.

I like Brown Bread and Dyanmat Extreme, not cheap, but good stuff.

I would recommend 2 layers, its that much better. Most people who do their ceiling have enough bass to cause their roof to flex and vibrate. It would be the last place I would do.

3. What will I need for install (yes, I know there are different types, just tell me about the type you used.)? Will the carpet fit back into place OK with the added thickness of the deadener?

You need a roller (dont buy from the deadner people, go to Home Depot) and something to clean the metal with (alcohol, etc...) You won't have any problems getting the carpet back in with 2 layers installed.

Hopefully he will chime in again soon, but I think Nick99 used something like 6 boxes of Dynomat on his truck including the doors back wall and under carpet with double layers throughout most of it. www.sounddomain.com will price match most publicly stated pricing...you can start there.

Single layer on floors, doors and back wall will take about 100-110 sq ft. Double layer will take twice that. :D The cheapest I've found Dynamat and Brown Bread were both on Ebay. :read:

I've used fatmat on all four doors and have used about 70 sq. ft. I ordered 200 sq. ft. and am still working on getting the rest installed (time is not my friend). The reason I used fatmat was simply cost.
I've read on numerous car audio boards that sound deadener = sound deadener, just buy the cheapest. The biggest issue is the time it takes to put it in. It took me about 1 1/2 hours per door (I'm anal and really slow).
Cut the mat into 3-6 inch strips and apply it that way. I've found this makes it much easier to work with.

I've used some cheap stuff before and it wasnt anywhere near as good as Dynamat aor BB. Even BB will tell you that Dynamat Extreme is 10% more effective than BB. :D It took me 3 hours per door, if you're anal and slow, what does that make me? :D

:D anally slow?

Extreme may be 10% more effective, but is it only 10% more expensive? NO WAY. It's usually 100% more expensive (and when I was price checking it was about 3.5 times the price) hence you can put two layers of the cheaper for the same price and be more effective. Sound deadening is about mass and stopping the sheet metal from resonating requires mass.
So, lets say my cheapo fatmat is 40 mills thick and two layers would equal 80 mils. Now, Extreme (I think) is 60 mils thick.
Now, saying my assumption is true (Extreme is twice the price), you get better bang for your buck with el cheapo.

Not bashing Fatmat, I've never heard anything bad about it. I have a double of Dynamat and BB in mine which would take 3 layers of Fatmat to equal and thats assuming they have the same density. I know, Fatmat is still cheaper, but 3 layers would be a pita. :D Maybe I just feel better seeing the Dynamat name on mine. (and I got a sticker)

I didn't think you were bashing fatmat nick, I was just trying to explain my recommendation to just buy the cheapest. You're right though that having to add more layers is a big PITA, but I've got more time than money:D .

I agree with Nick that the Dynamat Extreme is good stuff. That is what I covered everything with, and I couldn't be happier. Road noise is barely there at all, and my speakers don't seem to resonate as bad. :D I don't have any experience with BB, but it took my long enough to put one layer of this on so I wouldn't really want to have to put two layers of BB down.

All dampers are not created equal.
things to look for would include

heat tollerance (roofing products have a tendancy to have a lower tollerance to heat

Foil heat shield (rather than a poly heat backing) foil absors the heat helpint the damper to last longer and do its job better

Price after shipping (some companies will get you on the shipping)

Dynamat extreme is 44 mils thick
fat mat is 45 mils thick
Second Skin Damplifier is 45 mils thick
Brown bread is 63 mils thick
Second Skin STFU-80 is 80 mils thick

Brown bread is an awesome product for the money.

Just thought I would chime in with some stuff

Nope, but I'm a German minor and plan to go study there for a semester or two sometime in the future, though.
