anyone running a straight pipe from cat back on a 5.3L?

is it too loud to cruise with? I am looking for a tame idle/cruise with loud after 3000RPM... AND CHEAP too!

how is it compared to running a Flowmaster?

thanks

I'm running that exact setup and it is :rocking: I would recomend it to everyone. When you get on the gas it's got a nice open sound to it, but once i'm cruising in overdrive i don't even notice it over my stereo(although it's a loud system). Once i added my hypertech it sounds like a stock car whenever i floor it. I would say go for it man. Total cost of mod-$6 (I needed 2 sawzall blades)

I thought a straight pipe was illegal? well mine is, its been cut off right under the cab, which makes it loud as hell.

Yeah mine is illegal too cause it exits right under the passenger seat. However, all you have to do to make it legal is extend the pipe past the cab. I cut mine off a week after i got my inspection done so i didn't really care one way or the other.

sweet

I think legality is 2 things:
exit outside of cab
retain catalytic conv.

I was thinking of having a piece of tubing made that would exit in stock location and that I can switch back to stock without welding...

I remember that some cars use block off plates to make it run thought the stoct system and when the plates are off it would just be like straight pipes....not if you get an exhaust brake in there and wire it up so you can select weither it uses the stock system if you need to be quiet or pass inspection then flip the switch when you want power...you would even bypass the converters that way. I think it should work

When yall run no muffler,do you get a poping sound under hard acceleration, like a glasspack?

Nope, no popping sound for me. At first i thought that would happen but i guess the stock cat has just enough backpressure to avoid it. However my buddy with an old carburated dodge is running a true straight pipe (no cat or muffler) and his pops like hell all the time. The only time it comes close to "popping" is when i'm flooring it and i let off the cas completely right before it shifts, but even then it's not a true backfire pop
