okay well i need a new cat converter and muffler so should i buy a high flow cat or just the one of the originals? im thinkin of getting a flowmaster 40 or 50 series im looking for power before sound any opinions, and if i do this should i just use the orignal pipeing aint nothing wrong with it or is it better to move up in size. by the way its a 1996 chevy tahoe 2 door

If your after power, you'll want a Magnaflow (http://magnaflow.com/02product/cat-backs/chevy.htm). They have hi-flow cats too. I highly recommend a hi-flow cat. Their stainless systems are a bit pricey, but you could order some mandrel bent pipes, an Aluminum muffler (http://magnaflow.com/02product/universal/oval.htm) , and have it installed for probably half the cost of the stainless system alone. I'd go with a 5x11 oval muffler so it doesn't get too loud inside the cab since it's a tahoe. If you don't care about how loud it gets, I'd then go with a round body muffler (http://magnaflow.com/02product/universal/round.htm) , shorter the louder.:head:

Well I was going to say summit racing, but ouch those dual converters hurt.
96 tahoe dual cats (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CTO%2D9333)

You may want to check out your local muffler shop. Mine offers magnaflows at a good price and also carries catco catalytic converters for decent prices too. Also the aluminum magnaflows don't cost anymore than the flowmasters. You can't get a complete system, but install on a custom system isn't bad when you supply the mandrel bent pipes and muffler(s) if you find a good shop. Just get prices on-line and figure what muffler and cat you really want and take that to a shop and let them quote you on prices and install. Can't hurt.

yea that sure does suck. well i need all the way back to the manilfolds anyways but 250 for that and 250 for the muffler/pipeing. well i was thinking maybe buy the dual cat setup online and buy a muffler online and have the shop just install the piping i called a lot of shops around and they are all idiots really high prices. any other ideas i am poor and with the dual cat system and the catbacks setup i can do it myself i just dont have any possible way of welding so buying the pipe will be harder .

Well here's my view on mufflers, just so you know. Right now the hot ticket is straight through muffler designs. Currently I do believe magnaflow, edelbrock, and I think gibson all make straight through designs. There are no baffles and crap to restrict air flow. Check out www.summitracing.com to see what all they offer for the 96 tahoe. I do know that they offer the edelbrock cat back system part # EDL-5603 and it's $316.

OK...Heres three pages of exhuast systems from summit (http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=search.asp&type=bykeyword&searchtype=both&part=Tahoe+Exhaust)

Have fun and don't be afraid to give summit a call. They have great customer service. 1-800-230-3030. They can probably even give you options for the cats. Have fun and let us know what you deside on.

And just for fun...here are some edelbrock sounds from a 96 Tahoe with edelbrock headers and cat-back.

yea that does sound nice but im trying to do this as cheap as possible 316 + i need the new cats which is like 260 for the system and i only wish i could afford headers too. I dont know if this is worth it as i can feel that trans about to go & got a leak from a crack in the trans. casing but not leaking too much .plus i also need 4 new tires, only problem is that they are #$$%# stuck on there and i got some other rims that need a thin walled lugnut wrech which i dont own, i had a shop get 1 off after 1/2 of getting the nuts redhot. soo much going on, on this truck at the moment not to mention got 2 broken swaybar links.anyone wanta send me some $ or parts?

Wow, you've got a few projects going on there. I'm about to feel the hurt of a tranny rebuild my self. But that's going to be bitter sweet, cause of course I won't just have the tranny rebuild...it'll be NICE.

Well, just give summit a call. They'll hook you up with a exhaust system that you can install yourself for a price you can afford (damn it sounds like the jegs commercials, heeehee). You can get your sway bar end links there too, I suggest spending the extra $2 for the polyurythane end links.

you sure are a quick one. yea do u think it is worth the money to get the edilbrock one or to go with the cheaper flowmaster? how important are the cats should i go with good ones? yea i was plannig on getting the heavy duty swaybar links thanks for your help i am going to call them up soon enough.

Yep it's surfing the forum hour. I'm just a fullsize chevy truck whore. I love these trucks. To be honest the flowmaster will probably do you just fine. I'm just not a fan of flowmaster. There are better mufflers out there, but not for the money. I've been through 4 exhaust systems in 10 years. :whatever:

I've had the glasspacks, flowmasters, no muffler, and now my wonderful magnaflow. I like the magnaflow and edelbrock type of systems the best, but since money is an issue your probably better off just getting the flowmasters. And the Catco cats should do you just fine. Most likely you probably couldn't find stock cats that would be much cheaper if any cheaper than the catco's anyway.

i could prob do 316 for the edlobrok catback +216 for the catco kits...but not 500-600 for the magnaflow, if i were to get these no welding is required? and should i look into the engine mount problems before installing?

u think its better than the force ii's

I can't honestly say that one is better than the other. Personally, I'd go with the edelbrocks. I just like the internal design of the edelbrocks over the flows.

The edlebrock muffler
http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/autopartsphotos/exhaust/muffler/muffler_callouts.gif

The flowmaster
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/IMPTS/50_Series_S.jpg

See how the flowmaster has all those baffles...that is what robs power. The edlebrock are a straight through design which equals better flow. I'm also not sure if they bolt right up...I believe they do, but I'm afraid that's question someone else would have to answer.

Any regular socket should fit over your lugs (if you have stock rims and lugs)... I think the nuts might be 3/4"... actually I can't remember exactly... I can check tonight if you want me to. What are you finding about the wheels that makes it hard to get to teh lugs... theres not much that could get in the way. Just put a socket on there and get a long piece of pipe to use as leverage if you don't have air tools. If they are stuck and the studs are F'd they are easy to replace... I just had to replace a stripped one about a month ago... only took about 10 minutes after I got it all jacked up and on jackstands. Lemme know if you need instructions on that.

Well... if it was me. I grab some Catco cats off summitracing for about 50 a piece. 2 Hooker Aerochamber mufflers from summit for another 57 a piece. Aerochambers have almost no interior resonance. Then goto your favorite exhaust shop and have it all welded up real nice :D

yea they arnt stock rims so i need a thin walled wrench to fit in that little spot and they are stuck on from years or corresion i live right on the ocean so that makes everything much worse. i got a flat it took the shop 1/2 hour to get onewheel off using a blow torch getting each nut redhot.
about the exhuast im prob going to get the dual catcocat setup cause i need the piping too and i havent decided on the exhuast would i need to get new piping for the hooker's or the orignal and im prob just gonig for single exit

check it out so far

That just means you need to make sure your stock muffler has dual inlets before ordering. Also did you check out the hp/tq numbers compared to each muffler system. I couldn't believe how much more the magnaflows were...even to the borla systems. WOW. Well the flowmasters don't look like a bad set up though. Should work out for you. Just in case I'd crawl up under the truck and double check that you have a dual inlet muffler...they may have made a small number with a single inlet muffler for some reason (hey chevy does some wierd stuff...if you want to know more just ask). And when you go to order you stuff...I suggest you call them up and don't do it online. That way the operator will make sure what comes to your house is what you really need. They may even know of some other stuff you may need or just want while your under the truck.
