Back when I had my old '88 chev with a 305 and I brought it in for dual exhaust I asked for true duals but he told me that is illegal because of the EGR valve[I think thats what he said, it was a long time ago], what makes it illegal? The only way he would run it was off the manifolds into the y pipe then to the cat and then duals out the back with no muffler, it really defeats the purpose of having dual exhaust. Is there any way around this? Whats a pretty loud setup for a 350 now that I got my '89? The dual exhaust on it now isnt very loud.

It has nothing to do with the EGR valve. It is a federal law based on the catalytic convertor equipped from the factory. Your truck left the factory with only one, therefore, you cannot change that. :read:
I'd suggest a single 3" split into dual 2.25" after the convertor. It should be plenty loud.

On another note your TBI stock will not have enough power stock to even need true duals. It will likely suffer from a lack of back pressure and not be efficient. Loud is really all in the muffler. I'd suggest a system similar to what 91_bowtie recommended.

i have a 96' Burban, and it actually came with dual cats. so i cut out the single pipe system, put on the 40 Series Flowmasters after each cat, then out to the corners in the back! Let me tell u, this thing is plenty loud! and a good loud, not a ****ty one!
my system consists of 2.25" piping, and the tips are 3.5". i love this system, people think i have a new engine in it cuz it is so loud and "rumbly" i think i paid about 250 for it cuz the mufflers were used and the piping was done through a local muffler shop.
so what u should do, is, is what the others said before, a y-pipe after the cat, then run 2.25" pipes out to the back. and for a muffler, its really up to u, but i love the flowmasters!!!
good luck with ur setup, hopefully, i helped a bit!
