Ok fellas I really need some help. Here is the situation I have a magnaflow catback system on my silverado that exits at the stock location. I want to keep the pipes and swap out the magnaflow muffler with a 40 series Flows.
Magnaflow specs
legnth- 22in
width-11in
pipe size- 3in
Flowmaster 40 series specs
legnth-19in
width-9.75in
pipe size-3in
will this work? also im not sure if the offsets of the in/out spots on the muffler are identical so would I be able to flip the muffler from side to side so they line up or would that prevent the muffler from working properly? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Mike

You can flip the muffler up or down to change the offsets as long as you keep the inlet as the inlet.
Why don't you just see what sort of offset your magnaflow has and the order a flow with the same?
And the length isn't a problem if you plan on having a muffler shop do the install because they will just make an extension or an adapter piece to keep all your mounts the same.
No worries, it will work.

if you are just switching it out for sound and there is nothing wrong with it, I will take the magnaflow muffler when you are done

LOL, it's not everyday that you see someone wanting to pay money to lose power...

cravn, do you have any back to back dyno's proving there is a loss of power, or are you just sticking up for your brand?
haha, because that's what im doing right now:D

LOL, what do you think?? ;)
Actually, I'm going on what I've seen from dyno runs back when I was in the Mustang camp (don't hate). Flowmaster and other traditional baffled catbacks provided no such gains over the stock system, whereas the straight-throughs (Magnaflow, Dynomax race, Borla Xr1's, etc..) showed an approximate 10rwhp gain on average...
Yes, I understand that we are talking apples to oranges here, but there is some logic behind it.. Just take a look at the flow path of a Flowmaster muffler, and then that of the Magnaflow, and it's pretty obvious which one *should* show better gains...

If you want more sound why don't you go with the 18" or even the 14" Magnaflow? The 22" is the quietest muffler Magnaflow makes. I also have the 22" I want to get something louder eventually, so I'll probably go with the 14" I've been very pleased with the performance Ive gotten out of my Magnaflow. I wouldn't trade in the power for sound.

:iamwithst IMO, the actual *tone* of the Magnaflow is worlds better than the flowmaster especially at higher rpms... If you're just looking for more sound, go with a smaller Magnaflow.. If you're not as cool as me  , and just like the traditional Flowmaster sound, by all means do what makes you happy...

seat of the pants wise, i didn't really notice any difference between going from the magnaflow to the flowmaster. and if you look at the power on the vortec engines, they make most of the hp in the higher rpm's, but only going WOT from a stop, have i ever gotten my truck's rpm's even close to even 4000 rpm:crazy:
so basically most of the driving is around or under about 2700 rpm(and that's at 80 or 90 on the freeway:devil: )
so basically i've never gotten to see my trucks' full potential to begin with.

TRAITOR! Don't go backwards man. I just switched the other way. I went from a flowmaster 40 to a 14" round magnaflow. There is no way I'll go back to a baffled muffler now. Magnaflow all the way:D
And to answer your question...a reputable muffler shop will be able to switch out the mufflers with no problems. They cut off more pipe than just the muffler anyway so even if you replaced it with the same muffler they'd probably add a small amout of pipe.

I agree with you about the *tone* but I think the flowmaster is louder in decibels.

you never did answer me, would you like to sell me the muffler when you are done with it? I would love to take it off your hands

very good help here guys, thanks. I think I'm going to keep the Magnaflow I just wish it was louder. I did notice some gains with it and I like the sound but it would be perfect if it was just a little louder. So the shorter Magnaflows are louder? I wish I would have known that before. Man the tone of those 40 series is nice though:devil: Sorry tucker I'm gonna keep it.
