View Full Version : Exhaust for a 5.3L

I've ran a few searches and picked up some info, but not exactly what i wanted. I want to put exhaust on my truck. Definitely flowmaster, but not sure how to run it yet. That's what I need ya'lls opinions on. Here are my options:
1. Single in - Dual out 2 chamber with dumps right before the axle.
2. Single in - Single out 2 chamber with dumps right before the axle.
3. Cut before the y-pipe, install h or x-pipe and then (2) 2 chambers with dumps right before the axle.
What do ya'll think would sound best? I want the loud, low rumble. Which would perform best?
**cough** MagnaFlow **cough**
Will the tailpipes be visible from the outside of the truck?
If not, I'd go the single outlet.

No the tailpipes will not be visible from outside the truck.

I would seriously consider the Magnaflow X thou. It will save you the extra cost of the H or X pipe, and you will only have 1 muffler (2in/2out with the X pipe built in). This should save you at least $100.

It sounds great from 0-50 and above you can hardly hear it...

#1. i'm going to let you in on a little secret that my friends dont know. get you a single in/dual out flowmaster with turndowns before the axle. then cut off the turndowns, and install two big chrome echo tips (the kind you see sticking out the back and under peoples bumper), and have them angling downward. you wouldnt believe how much the deep tone changed on my 5.3 when i angled them downwards. all that sound pounding off the pavement and under your truck bed is awesome, and i always get thumbs up from 50 year old guys saying how great it sounds, it reminds them of their chevelle in high school. any of these 3 you listed, they will all sound the same.

So if I just went with #1 cut the stock oem muffler off my 03 5.3L, installed a super flow single in dual out then dumped it. It will sound the same if I cut the Y pipe out installed a H Pipe to two super 40's flowmasters and dumped them both?
If I think what your saying is this. keep everything infront of the stock muffler the way it is. Then toss a flowmaster exhaust on (single in dual out), dumped with 12" echo tips. Correct?

correct, and it will sound awesome. a true dual system isnt going to sound any better. how are you going to have room for 2 dual-out mufflers under there? do you mean regular single outs or dual outs cause those super 40 dual outlets are way too big to fit 2 under there...i've tried...the gas tank is on the left, and you only have enough space for one layed flat on the right, and i dont think you can turn 2 of them on their side like you would a single outlet muffler.

2 regular single outs from the super 40 muffler.
or
1 single in dual out super 40, dumped before the rear axle with 12" echo tips.
if I had two mufflers it would need to be single in's/out's. What one should I do? and other than the muffler cutting that out should I change the size of any other pipes or keep them the same size other than the tips?

to tell you the truth, it would be cheaper AND sound just as GOOD, to get the single in/dual out.
i wanted true duals after i got the super 40 dual out, and all the muffler guys told me "its not going to sound any better, the dual outlet muffler is designed to be as good as the true duals just cheaper and it just gets the job done with out extra crap under there."
this is true, so i'd go with the dual out with the 12" echo tips. i think he cut about a foot of the pipe off before the muffler and used larger pipe...
would it help if i posted pics of mine tomorrow?

Where can I get those echo tips at ? and what size inlet on the super 40 and what size on the dual outlets? I have a 99' Z71 with 5.3 stock exaust and want to try this myself and save labor. Best place to get the super 40 at? Sorry for all the questions but you have me curious now.
Thanks, Doug

your local muffler shot will have the muffler and tips that you want. tell them what you are looking to have and they'll know what you are talking about.
i will post pics of this later.

nickboudro- yes pics would be great!
If you could also get sound that would be even greater! I would like idle from outside of the truck (in front of truck) idle in truck with windows/ doors closed and shut. and perhaps a 55 mph with cruise control on on flat ground.
I never had so many issues with picking exhaust on my dodge, but I never had a Chevy so I have no idea how they can make some sound with exhaust modifications. Thanks

Search eBay for the super 40 exhaust...I know it'll take a bit longer to get but why pay 100 bucks if you can get one fro under 70 shipped? You'll still need to have someone weld some echo tips on the muffler if you want to go like he has. I'm looking at doing his method, or getting the same muffler, and running a run off of Gibson's supper truck/flow masters DOSS exhaust.
I'm not sure yet, I need some some to make a decision. I want to thank nickboudro, so far he's been a great help as well as others for me trying to make a choice! I'm just having a issue trying to find the right muffler. Seems like flowmaster has the orignal 40 (which is a head killer at 1800-2000 rpms) the super 40 which I want and the 40 delta flow. However all the mufflers I see say they are the super 40 but also delta flow...:bawl:

yeah, they are 3''...i can assure you that you will enjoy the sound...it sounds awesome in the cab from start up to 50 miles an hour, it has that deep rumble that only a V-8 could get. its not at all annoying, and you can feel the sound underneath vibrating under your feet, but not too much. its very "ear-pleasing" in the cab. after 50 mph it quiets down enough to where you can have the radio on and enjoy music. people are always looking, because its not common around here for a reg cab to have that good of a deep, rich rumble (most guys have the 4.3's around here). on cruise control, at 70 mph, its just like at 55, quiet but enough to know you've got some power... i let my mom drive it and even she likes it.
when i first got my exhaust, i had my wife drive it up and down the road just so i could listen to it.
the chrome echo tips make soooo much difference, i'd recommend them for any kind of muffler setup. i am positive thats why mine sounds so good, because of the sound echoing off the pavement and bed floor. on a reg setup, the sound is just shooting out the pipe into the air under the bumper.
i guess what i'm trying to say is, no matter what setup you get, get the tips as well.

I really would like sound at idle, going at a moderat pace to 55mpg and then holding it at 55mph. Also you have the super 40 flowmaster correct?
I'm trying to post a sound file for someone and its 40mb so if possible to 3 different ones! I'm having troubles converting it smaller as well.

Nope, sounds perfect to me, and hopefully we can get the sound clip up soon, it's just such a large file.
I've got a Flowmaster Origanel 40 single in single out muffler if any ones lokin, I'll sell it for cheap, got about 12,000 miles on it.

...yea I love the deep bass sound and it sounds as though it's a bigger V8 than the 5.3L Now I want to get the Hypertech programmer and a cold air intake for it so I've been looking on ebay for those and I need to save a little more $$ My truck only has 41850 miles on it and I bought it new in 1999 and always wanted to do these mods for it but house projects came first. Thanks for the pics and idea because it saved me $$ doing it myself.
