Regarding the article submitted by Cravnpup: That doesn't look like it applies to the NBS FSC's and FSGMC's. If that article is true, then why do the Z06's come with no screen on their MAFS?
I have my screen removed and I haven't experienced any problems. No SES codes for me.
I know the MAFS has a metal wing-like bar in there. Does it matter if the bar is vertical, horizontal, at an angle?
Also, the way the NBS filter is set up, it doesn't seem like large particles can get into the MAFS and damage it. I have rigged a tube to go from my airdam to the airbox and have not have any problems with that affecting the MAFS. I check and clean the throttle body, air tubes (UPD), and MAFS every oil change. I use electrical contact cleaner spray for the MAFS.
Did anyone out there encounter any negative effects of the screen removal? I wonder if it affects the functioning of a supercharger? I plan to get a Radix.

No problems since i removed mine about a year or so ago.
I took mine out, noticed no difference. (cept I think it pings more)

It should apply to any car or truck that comes with MAF screens. The Z06's don't come with any, but their engine management system is programmed that way. As I said offline to 97Silverado, it's not that removing them doesn't increase airflow, just that the resulting fluctuations in the voltage signal will likely negate the small flow increase... Basically I don't think it's going to hurt anything other than your mileage and in a few cases your idle. But I certainly wouldn't expect any significant gains in power... I'd welcome someone willing to put this to the test on the dyno. Would be some good info to have...

I removed the one on my 99 when the truck was brand new....it's still running perfect without it.:whatever:

However, I still believe that with other appropriate mods (exhaust for example) this mod can only help. Looks like until we get some hard dyno numbers then we can only depend on anecdotal evidence. :read:

Good info! I would guess that the Granatelli MAFS is recalibrated for the increase in airflow.
Yeah I agree, I too would like to see some dyno numbers. I remember I read somewhere that the o2 readings fluctuated between lean and rich at part throttle and WOT with the screen removed. I think it was on LS1tech.com. Someone ATAP'd it.
Oh well, when I have my RADIX installed by this fall (hopefully). It will be with a descreened MAFS. Hope it doesn't screw something up.
Now about the EGR mod...
I've been descreening MAF's since I've had my first of many F-body's w/ great results. Any time you start to mod anything this a great free mod and would recomend it to anyone.
