The tired and slipping 700R4 is coming out soon and I am reinstalling my rebuilt oem TH400. I don't know much about flexplates other than I need a new one. I'm sure I could just pick up a Summit catalog and order one to fit a MkIV and it would work. But I'd like recommendations on brands and types. Are there any performance ones on the market. For example I have a lightweight billet steel flywheel on my Camaro and love it. Is there an equivalant one for flexplates? Is a lightweight flexplate available, and would you recommended one? or do I want a heavy duty type? I sure there has got to be a performance oriented flexplate on the market.

What flexplate are you running on your performance street truck and what are the benefits?

Anything S.F.I. approved should work just fine. Although you could probably just use a stocker. The nhra requires the sfi rating I think whan you get in the 11's but mine has never been checked. The aftermarket ones are probably heavier than the stock one. The only way to lighten it up is to change the torque converter. A 10" converter does wonders for throttle response and launches.

i bought a tci flexplate from either summit or jegs, i can't remember. what most people look for is a thicker than stock sfi approved flexplate and the tci is both. i think its .035 thicker. and they aren't very expensive either.

Thanks, guys. I'll take a look at the aftermarket ones that are approved. The mail order catalogues don't provide much useful info. I was wondering if they were pretty much all the same.
