avatar file type?

Hey everyone,

I have tried to put an avatar file on my profile and for some reason I cannot get it to take the file due to file size. I've sized it down to even lower than 100x100 and it is still too large. I am saving it as a .jpg......should it be saved as something else? Thanks.
