Hi gang: Monday I am going to get dual exhaust put on my 02 stepside with 4.8 and I could use advice on the pros & cons of different systems. It is going to be cat-back and I want something with good tone, but not a window rattler. It will be the first mod on this truck and I want to get it right the first time.

THANX
Dave:D

Hello Dave... On the 4.8L if you want duals, go 2 inch all the way. If you have to have big go no more than 2.25. 2.5 inch will be too big for the 4.8L unless you plan to supercharge, and will rob low end torque. On the mufflers, I run Walker Quiet Flows on my Tahoe and like them. Very quiet, low tone. You will also want a crossover between the pipes for max power. I recommend staying away from Flowmasters as everyone has them, so Flows don't give a "custom" sound anymore.

Incidentally, on my 99 Silverado I had 2.25 duals with crossover and Dynomax Turbo Tubes, and it really helped power across the band. Most noticable power increase was midrange.

Thanks for the input, I didn't even consider crossover before.Nothing a salesman says can equal real world experience. I will post undercarriage pics soon. Thanks again!

But has a lot of experience and knowledge pertaining to exhausts.

my opinion would be to not downsize the exhaust untill after the mufflers then go no smaller than 2-1/4" for the tailpipes.

That would mean running 2-1/2" after the cats to the mufflers. The headpipe is the same size for the 4.8 as they are for the 5.3L and the 6.0L engines. Give the exhaust time to cool down some (less volumn) before reducing the pipe size. This will also make the sound a little `crisper' than larger pipes.

Eh heh heh heh... you vedy funnie goay, Featherf*(ker.. heh heh...

Hey 20024.8stpsde, another consideration would be to check out one of Featherfoot's PV systems, can be split after the muffler and eliminates the need for the crossover, and can save some weight. His system actually sucks more power out of the engine. I used his products on a Blazer and was very happy with the power provided. I'd have used them on the Tahoe as well, but the wife wanted super quiet. The Walkers seem to be fitting that need, even though the install job was crap. My system has been on less than a year and is already cracked.

Without dyno testing there is no way to tell whether there were gains or losses. The psycological effect of changing something is always positive. That is what most companies rely on. If you spent money for it , it has to be better, which is not always the case.
