Re: DIY, Custom A Pillar Construction Instructions!!

I'm going to be doing this mod soon....two quick questions. What is the optimal direction to point the tweeters? And, my tweeters are Sony's that are about 3" and have no bolt holes for mounting them...any ideas on how to secure them into the pillar from behind?

Re: DIY, Custom A Pillar Construction Instructions!!

every car is different. i tried the exact same set up in my truck and it sounded like ****. the way i like it was the tweeters pointed at the opposite head rest. as far as no screw holes, it sounds like they were designed to be put in some type of mounting cup, you might call sony to see if they have any. another option is if they have a ring around the speaker like 99% of them do, is just to drill your own holes, or if you dont want to drill, they make heavy duty velcro that will be more than strong enough to hold them on. im probably going to start mine on sunday...if all goes well...

Re: DIY, Custom A Pillar Construction Instructions!!

The speakers came with doublesided tape to put on the bottom and mount them onto the dash or door panels or wherever. That would look tacky as can be in my opinion. Maybe I can stick them to the A-pillar and just mold around them with the fiberglass then? Maybe cover the tweeter with masking tape or something so the fiberglass doesn't stick directly to it in case I ever have to cut them out? It's such a stupid design. I'll never buy speakers like that off ebay again without going to see them in the store first.

i finally took the time to read this article...good build man...a couple more problems arise if you would ask me...first of all...you cant really texture and paint a-pillars very well...from my experience they get entirely too hot and begin to crack/peel during a TX summer....mainly at the parts where the plastic meets the glass....also...a great way to bond plastic to glass is to get bondo made especially for corvettes...i dunno the brand i just see my friend usin it alot..its called "corvette panel adhesive body filler"...he says with plastic it works 1000x better...

Bogey, ask your buddy if it is called "Vette Filler". I heard about that from someone else around here. A body man at a chevy dealership told my it may be used to repair dash pads/boards.

im about to do that to my truck, well see how everything holds up. its kinda strange they would make something like that for dashes and stuff which are in direct sunlight and not be able to hold up to the heat??

Re: DIY, Custom A Pillar Construction Instructions!!

heres my page about it, it might help with your question
basically you get a mounting ring for the speaker, place it where you want it, put fleece over it, fiberglass that, bondo everything smooth and voila

Re: DIY, Custom A Pillar Construction Instructions!!

liquid plastic for not so big of projects that don't need strength(so simple pods with tweets). might have to order it. but alittle goes along way. much easier than using FG. wish I'd known about this stuff before. steve meade might have posted this already but he used some. he can probably attest to how simple it is and how much easier it is to get a prettier result than FG. here's his link from termpro.

Re: DIY, Custom A Pillar Construction Instructions!!

I have my a-pillars smoothed and painted to match my truck but I want to fiberglass the passanger side and have two tme-m580 alpine 5.8 screens glassed into there to go along with the triple gauge pod on the drivers side with my gauges?? Does anyone do this and can tell me what would be a good way to start it off or do they do it for money and can make one for me?? --Alex

Re: DIY, Custom A Pillar Construction Instructions!!

I looked at the post in the link in the post above mine and it shows how to do a dash but not how to do screens into my a-pillars. I have not seen it anywhere where people have put screens into a passanger side a-pillar. I was wondering if anyone has done that or can help me with doing that OR would like to be paid for doing a custom one for my truck?? --Alex

Re: DIY, Custom A Pillar Construction Instructions!!

i should. Maybe Mad Mike can hook me up. But id really like to do it myself to save on cost and plus, Id like to learn how to get more in depth with fiberglassing. --Alex

it's the same concept. make a square to house the screen and mold it to the pillar with the liquid plastic. that's about as simple as it gets.
