Door Pods/Baffles (Working Log) UPDATED!
Okay, so I am finally gonna make me a set of these door pods. They will house my Dynaudio 6.5" and tweet. Later on when I get the 8" Dynaudio mid, I will make new ones to house that in the 6.5"s localle. I just started and only have the first baffle constructed. I started out by making a template from poster board, then once the fitment was good, transfered the outline to 3/4" MDF. They seem easy enough so far. I had a guy quote me $200 for a bare down raw set. There is now way I am gonna pay that price. Heck if they turn out easy enough, I will start selling these things. No need to pay hundreds for a few pieces of MDF and a few holes cut. I will post some working pics later on. Here is the design I am using:

looking real good

Hell is oneself; Hell is alone, the other figures in it merely projections.
There is nothing to escape from and nothing to escape to.
One is always alone.

Well since these are merely the pics I am working BY, and not my actual pods (I will be posting them later today). Okay with that being said...

The black plastic is ABS plastic and is needed to fill the gap a bit just where the door pod meets the bottom of the dash when you close the door. Its necessary to recess the mdf a bit so the pod doesnt hit the door when shut. BUT you will have a large gap, hence the plastic helps fill that gap some, then its all smoothed off with body filler. When I get more in depth with this build you will understand more with the pics I take.

Can't wait to see the picks and a little more info! Local shop wants $300 to put my two sets of 6.75" components in the front doors, so I'd love to save and do it myself, but I've got no experience. Gotta learn sometime I guess.

All you will need is a jigsaw and a router. The mdf is not too expensive, so dont worry about messing up. Just keep trying, or else you will never learn.

Re: New Door Pods (Work Log)!
Any chance of you putting comments/captions with the pics? I've looked at Tribal Vision's pics and some others, but they were all alot more extensive than I want. Wanna do pretty much what your doing, but not sure how to support it, how much bondo/glass I should use (if at all), etc. Thanks, man.

Yeah sure no problems. I am going to post my pics on my Sound Domain page. I will create a new page dedicated to this build with full captions and almost step by step pics. There isnt much prep work (some really light body filler), mainly painting. Since the baffle is entirely made of MDF, that gives you the strength.

Re: New Door Pods (Work Log)!
Updated progress pics, can be found on my SD webpage, page #5.

Baffle template made from posterboard:

Baffle cut from 3/4" mdf:

Used a roundover bit on my router to curve the edges:

Test fitting on door panel. You'll notice that the top edge has a gap that needs to be filled in, this is where the ABS plastic comes into play. The 3/4" at first I thought to be too thicke and would protrude too much out of the door panel, but in the last pic you will notice that the baffle really doesnt stick out more than the stock grille did. However, I think I may make a second set out of either 1/2" or 5/8" mdf to compare the thickness to: Enjoy!
