Re: Fiberglassing Sub and Center Console enclosure???
that looks like some heavy duty stuff. Looks like you have some woven and chopped matting there. that's some good stuff. where did you get that from, and how much did that whole box run you? I personally just ran to home depot and grabbed as many bags of it that i could find. i now that i'll have to layer the hell out of mine, but oh well. i would say you will need a 5 gallon resin bottle for all that. around 130 bucks. but it will last you, plus you won't have to stop in the middle of the project to get more. I'm using chopped matting by the way.
oh and nice slippers bro ![]() |

Re: Fiberglassing Sub and Center Console enclosure???
5 gallons is a little much...i used a gallon on mine and it had at least 4 coats on it plus the topcoat that was all resin. The thicker the matting you use, the more resin it will take, but that also means it will be much stronger.

Re: Fiberglassing Sub and Center Console enclosure???
you'll need 7 layers minimum. I'd be worried more abount bracing with such large and heavy subs.
Also, your front stage needs to all be in front of you. putting the tweets behind you is going to kill your sound stage. and since they'll be so close to you itll will most likely drown the other set of tweets out. i know you're trying to achieve loud but you might be sacrificing overall sq goals. i'd start with one set and go from there. you can always add power. then maybe go to horns later. |

Re: Fiberglassing Sub and Center Console enclosure???
i picked up a bunch of 3/8" and 1.25" dowels from home depot today, so i don't thnik bacing is going to be a problem. i wonder if using fish netting between layers of matting would add a little strength to the glass, i just don't want to use a lot of rope. i have nylon cords, but don't know how that will work in there. i have a whole spool of that. it's actually 550 chord, it is used in parachute rigs.
about the sound stage...i previously stated that i'm building a pillars and door pods they will be aimed up over my head, but i'm going to play around a bit to see if i can get it to sound right. i think i'll be fine with what i've ordered...i am working on the design still. building a glass enclosure with a slotted ported is proving to be quite interesting to say the least. |

Re: Fiberglassing Sub and Center Console enclosure???
Sounds like you have alot thought going into this enclosure for your subs and the custom pillars Loki. I would like to see how this will turn out, keep up the good work.

Re: Fiberglassing Sub and Center Console enclosure???
what do ya think....
is this look alright? i didnt think i would use that much resin... might have to go back for another gallon. autozone was the only place that had it around here in gallon size. for 30bucks.![]() or do the white looking strings not saturated enough? i tried to rubb it in but it just wasnt worken any beter... i figure i might just use the small matt over it... i have no clue... my first time glassing i hope it turns out good and strong! then ill work my frame around and trim it and mold in some MDf to attach it to...

Wow, I think that I used 2 gallons for the whole floor in the ext cab. You might have used too much. Looks like your mix was hot that is the cause of the dark color. That also might be why you can still see the strands of glass in the cured product. FYI, You should only need 4 layers of 2oz matt to get 1/4" thick fiberglass. ![]() You get what you pay for......nothing is free. |

Re: Fiberglassing Sub and Center Console enclosure???
i'm also not too sure about laying down the full layer like that. i hear it's best to tear into 6, 8, 10, or 12" pieces and allow the fibers to mend together than to lay down one layer...

might i ask how much is it by the gallon at home depo? i work preaty much right next to a home depo... just didnt feel like driving into town to get it this morning... im located right off west side of indianapolis. not sure what you mean about hot mix. other than maybe alittle to much hardener... but i did mess up the first few cups just by not wanting to count out each DROP for every ounce LOL it sugested 12 drops per oz.... i dont even wanna know how many drops i used. LMFAO i calculated like 100 and something drops just for one of the small cups.LMFAO so i cheated and just kinda guessed.LOL and with the last of my resin i just divided the resin cups to the ammount of hardener...

I would highly reccamend NOT using fleece for the whole thing! fleece will be good for the first layer to stretch out the shape that you want, but the resin will not soak through the fleece like it will with fiberglass matting and woven fiberglass. make the shape you want with wood, 1/2" or 3/4" mdf in areas that you will not be fiberglassing over. make a mounting plate for the subs and cut some pieces of wood to support them in the shape that you want them to sit in. stretch some fleece over the frame you made and resin the top of it, then go over it with matting and dab out all the air bubbles with the paint brush. do a few layers of matting then a few of the woven fiberglass, the first layer with the thicker woven and the last layers with the lighter woven to give it a smoother finish. try to do this all at once to make it all one primary bond which will be stronger than secondary bonds; doing a layer and letting it dry then another layer and letting it dry etc . . . too much resin insn't a good thing, it adds unecessary weight and it's the fiberglass matting and woven that gives it the strength. good luck |

Re: Fiberglassing Sub and Center Console enclosure???
it's about 30-35 bucks at home depot...and i'm just using fleece for the form sack...i'm going to be doing exactly what you described i'm not going to keep throwing fleece on top of fleece...i'll do more of a write up at work tomorrow...my scanner's broke or i would scan my design in, so i'll bring it to work and do it tomorrow.
