Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

ok...here is an idea from someone (me) who has never done this before and therefore has no idea if this is even feasible.

If you are worried about warping the balsa due to the porous nature of the wood and fiberglass interacting, what if you wrapped in vinyl then fiberglass over that. Is the vinyl non porous enough?

Or is this just ignorance talking?

Great looking project btw. Looking at doing the carputer in my 01 silverado. Thanks for taking us with you on this trip.

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

It's a valid suggestion. The only issue I would see is the wood & resin wouldn't bond then, which once again causes warping issues with temperature changes. I think he should be okay, but if it were me, I might not resin the entire project at one time.

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

I could also see lifting a problem if I laid fiberglass on vinyl.

I am going to stick to the original game plan and brace the hell out of it. However, I will probably only resin 1 section at a time - not all at once per theKlown's suggestion. After the whole piece is resin'ed I should be good to go right? No more worries of warping?

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

The resin drying is a chemical reaction that puts off heat, so there's always a threat of warping. After the initial coat is on, you shouldn't have the big issues though. The balsa just soaks up so much that a lot more heat is produced... Combine that with the inevitable shrinking and it can give you some major headaches! Key thing is to go slow and even in the beginning.

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

got the stuff from US Composite this afternoon, so maybe tomorrow I'll be putting some resin down. Still need to do the bracing but that should be pretty quick and easy.

Ran into a snag with the case though. My ideas of mounting it in the glove box or under the cup holders aren't going to work. The MB, HD and DVD drive just take up too much space. I checked under the seats, but since I have power seats, no room.

Anyone have any suggestions?

(edit) I have power seats, so it won't fit under there either

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

What's in the center console? Basically, are you keeping the stock sub there (if Bose equipped) or are you willing to remove the console and fabricate a case inside the console?

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

I was really wanting to put the stereo/ac controls in the center console and put another screen where those are. But I am beginning to think that that may not be an option. I think the other place that might work would be under the rear seats, but I need to check what sort of clearance I have when I fold the seats down. Anyone else have any other ideas?

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

I was planning on going under my rear seats... But then again I have an OBS. If you check over on MP3car, I know there was at least one NBS 'Hoe running this setup as well.

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

Just got back from Dads. Decided to mount the cpu where the cup holders are now. The DVD drive will be mounted there as well. I think this is the best solution, plenty of room for cpu, power supply, cables don't have to travel great distances, don't need to hack up a lot factory pieces. This will also still allow me to put a 15" in the dash and move the stereo/ac controls to the center console. And once I get around to that, I'll add the cup holders back in. Not sure how much we'll get done in the next couple of days, both of us have some stuff going on - so we'll see.

the 15 was an after thought after this project got started. I was thinking about how this system would be used and I realized that I would want to be able to play a DVD on one screen and have the GPS navigation running on another screen. Yeah, it's probably overkill, but I thought the idea was cool and I was able to pick up the 15 for free from a friend.

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

remove the factory sub if you need room. just remove the two 10 mm bolts behind the shroud you are fabbing. take out both seats. then the console should slide up so you can disconnect the harness. then remove the sub.

don't have a sub.... at least I don't think I do - I do, it's pretty weak!

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer

small update: got the pieces holding the screen cut and installed as well as the screen cover cut:

What you see is everything needed for the TS (TS overlay, screen, and all necessary chips) - I will need to drill a hole in the back to allow the cables to exit, but that's easy.

Unfortunately won't be putting any resin down till later in the month. I have training the next 2 days that will run late. Then on Thursday night I will be driving to Philly so I can hop on a plane to the Dominican Republic on Friday for a week. But when I get back, resin will be going on.
