Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer
speak of the devil - he just called to tell me that everything is setting up really nice and he wasn't able to see any twisting or warping. So far, so good.

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer
are you going to end up keeping the balsa behind the fiberglass or use the fiberglass as a mold?

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer
yeah the balsa is staying - think of it as the skeleton. The felt is glued to the front and resin was added to the felt. Today, I'll be adding resin to the bare balsa from the back side.

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer
I've got a question - anyone know what SEM color matches the dark tan piece I'm replacing? I've looked online but it's too hard to tell - also, doesn't appear that anyone in my area sells SEM products.

If it were next month, I'd be able to tell you... I've got a project in for searching on OEM codes.

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer
more progress!!! This morning Dad put a second coat of resin down. I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out :
I was able to do some test fitting - screen dropped right in - nothing twisted or warped!!! Need to dress the edges and do some trimming before I can test it in the truck, but if the screen fit like before, I'm confident it will fit the console just like before.
Went ahead and applied some resin to the back side
Not sure if we'll be working tomorrow since it's my birthday and I plan on going out If we do work, it will be the trimming and dressing the edges and might also get some sanding in so next week we'll be able to shoot some primer.

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer
alright, I lied. Nothing new really to show. We have some fit problems. Before we put the resin down, we added some parts that secured the screen to the piece (sides and a back panel). What we didn't do was check for clearance behind. So now we're cutting out the inner dash piece so there will be enough room for it all to fit correctly. The other thing thats getting done is sanding - a lot of it and it's not fun or cool to look at so no pictures.

You're supposed to do your sanding right after you resin... Why? You'll be buzzin' and it's fun then!
Lookin' good so far!

looks good, seems like your dad has some really good experience when dealing with fiberglass. It brings back nightmares of when i had my sonoma.

actually it's both of ours first time working with fiberglass. I did a bunch of research on it and explained to him what we needed to do. Then it's been a matter of just taking our time and getting it done.

No paint codes yet. I'm pretty sure you can dig around on here and Google and find them though. You might try starting another thread... I know a few of the members here know them like the back of their hand.

I sure hope you get some updates soon. I want to do this to my truck and I want to see what it takes. It looks great so far. Get us some pics!

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer
lots getting done, just nothing really to show. We've been working on getting the fit and finish to look factory.
When we started this project, I was thinking I might try to make a few extra to see if anyone was interested in buying one. After all the time we've spent getting this to fit right, there is no way I'd recover for the amount of time spent. Just take your time and work slow and you should be fine.

Re: FINALLY installing 10.4" TS and carputer
How long did it take total to just build the balsa frame?
