Going to depend on the application/box and most importantly the midbasses that are being played with them.

Re: Subs foward firing?
By midbass, I'm assuming you mean a midbass driver, not the notes. If so, how would a midbass driver be of any effect on a sub's quality? That would be overall quality there. I wouldn't judge a sub on a separate speaker being played with it.

as far as WINNING SQ, Kicker> DD, I don't think DD has EVER won any SQ awards. Again, your personal judgement.

PS I agree on the tin can, I couldn't get my '70 Chevy truck loud, course exhaust was louder anyway :)

because in real SQ, most won't use a ported design, and there won't be 2900 watts to the sub portion, on a real SQ setup. Stage, and midbass is more important. Not a peaky midbass, or substage.

Ah... I realize that most wouldn't use a ported box, or 3k watts. Just... Ah I give up on complete SQ setups.

Re: Subs foward firing?
not to get into this argument, but there is an F250 being done by a team HAT member right now running about 2.5kw to his DD's right now. Expect to see him at worlds. (SQ)

I agree with Polecats statements, but will address the midbass specifically. In a perfect world the sub will be LP at 30hz or so which requires one hell of a midbass setup. For those real lows, the square Kickers are generically better than the DD. Regrettably in my setup I have to have the sub play to 40hz to compensate for my "weak" midbass

DD has a market niche, but it isn't at all a SQ one.

In a perfect world my midbass would play down to 10Hz with authority!
