Re: 67-72 or 73-87
dont you guys wish the engines were still like that today, and that easy to work on with out the need for programmers and sensors, the only programmer need on these is your self which is the way it should be in my opinion. so CRUMMY is the 402 big block same as the 396 just bigger bore. i have not heard much about 402.

I agree.
396s had 4.094" bores, and 402s had 4.124" bores. IIRC, GM switched some time in 1969.

Re: 67-72 or 73-87
i don't have any picks right now. but can tell you the clutch set up is different then a small block. the cross shaft the way the ball bolts on the block is all by itself. the ball on the frame bolts on back father then the small block.
the frame mounts for the motor are different too. but you can get by with the sb ones there. for exhaust you use on the right side chevelle. on the left impala. that is what the factory used.
power sterring is the same as 66-67 chevelle big block. same for the alt. set up. short water pump.

Re: 67-72 or 73-87
chevy made the change to 402 in 70. it was a .030 over 396. it was something about the bigger bore bruning cleaner so the smoge pump was not needed.
you will not find 402 listed in the parts books. it will come under 400 4bl. the 400 2 bl. was the small block.

Re: 67-72 or 73-87
i don't know of any boks that tell you the little things to look for when you are looking at the trucks or parts. things like.
the difference between 69-70 and 71-72 front fenders is the 69-70's the motor badge is unde the model trim and the 71-72 it is under the side marker light.
on cabs 68-70 have a spot formed for the rear view mirror to screw to the 71-72 are smothe because the mirror glues to the windshield.
67 had no side marker lights or reflectors. 68 was reflectors only 69 reflectors. lights optional. 70 on had lights.
in the dash no c10 c20 or c30 had a factory vacumn gage if there is one the dash came out of a big truck with vacumn breaks.you will find this mostly on the factory tach trucks that some one made up.
up thru 72 all the alt. were on the drivers side with a short water pump.
thru 70 c10 trucks had 6 bolt wheels and drum breaks. 71 first year for 5 bolt wheels and disc breaks.
72 doors where the only oones to have a screw in the top of the door under the windwing.

Re: 67-72 or 73-87
well, I like the 67-72 trucks, 67/68 being my favorite because of the front clip, but I'm partial.....Here's mine:
