Re: Started working on my girl
i could be wrong but i think the 6.2 would be an easier swap because the 6.5 has electronics i think another option that alot of people do if you want a diesel is swap in a 12valve cummins also no electronics and with a few mods they can make decent power

Thats the swap I want to do, the 4bt, small, economical but can still make decent power. The 12 valve everybody talks about is the 5.9L 6 cylinder.

Re: Started working on my girl
your 1/2 ton front axle wont like the weight of a Cummins sitting on top of it.

and for the 4BT power is just a little on the low side for a fullsize truck that you're looking to tow with.

Agreed!! Id throw a dana 60 upfront.. and a 12valve should do you some justice!

isnt the only difference between a 1/2 ton corporate 10 bolt and a 3/4 corporate 10 bolt just the hubs ant the axle shafts and gears the same i mean ideally a dana 60 would be sweet but i think his front axle would hold up fine untill he started beating on it.

and dont you find the 4BT in vans that are loaded most of the time and prob wiegh more than a fullsize shortbed truck?

Thats just the thing, If he knows hes going to beat on it.. Why do work 2 times just do it right the first time and put a stronger axle under the truck.

Re: Started working on my girl
cuz stronger axle means more money and swapping out an axle isnt a big deal so y not do up the truck with what you have and upgrade once its trashed i know its sweet to do everything right the first time around but its also nice to have a pretty sweet truck you can drive not somthing ur gonna have to wait to drive because you dont have the money to finish it

Re: Started working on my girl
Yes, You are right about that. But normally before i go in to a project i get numbers down on paper of a round about price what im going to have to spend. And throw in a extra couple hundred bucks for surprises like this one, I could get a dana 60 for 150 bucks. Its not really that expensive. But either way i see what your saying. Id feel better going down the road in it knowing i can go beat on it right now and not have to worry about any weak links for the most part :)

Re: Started working on my girl
the "3/4 ton" axle is essentially a half ton axle, with 2 more lug studs, and a bit bigger rotor. bearings and everything are the same. the Dana 60 is quite a bit beefier all around, including the wheel bearings which will be required to support the weight of the Cummins 100% of the time. your 1/2 ton front axle isnt designed to support that kind of weight.
