400 Small Block
since i decided to scrap the auto tranny swap idea ive found a 400 thats a possibility. now i was wondering if its worth buying and what i can expect out of it and will it bolt right up to the 4 speed tranny i already have in the truck?

Re: 400 Small Block
it will bolt right up, and be a direct replacement for whatever existing small block you may have. the flywheel is 400 specific, so you'll need that. is the engine running? can you hear it run? standard bore?

Re: 400 Small Block
no i cant hear it run because it needs a rebuild and is disassembled. i believe its stock bore but may need to be bored out. i figured for 500 bucks i get a block, heads, crank, holley 650 carb and after market intake it will be a good deal

Re: 400 Small Block
if ya want that 400 and its in ok shape you can build a 406 or a 400 stroker, bore it .030 over, sleeve it and re bore it, and put some 2.02I 1.76E heads, a .272 cam, beehive springs, 1.6" roller rocker arms, keith black pistons forged-cast, H-beam forged connection rods, and a diesent carb and intake set up, started one had it ready to go but i had to sell it cause i was going to germany but i had the plan and would eventually like to do another one just had to put my 2 cents in and yes any GM small block will bolt up to a gm, tranny

why would you want to sleeve it, thats not the way to do things, the cylinder walls will not be able to disapate the heat as good as a non sleeved block unless its designed that way. food for thought.

Re: 400 Small Block
Don't know if $500 is a good deal or not but sounds good with the carb & intake. Depending on intake & cam, it will probably have alot of torque so good for a 4x4. A set of vortecs and an intake to fit would wake it up nice I believe.

if you do go with vortec heads dont forget to have the steam ports drilled

Re: 400 Small Block
If you use Vortec heads, watch your compression ratio. You may need pistons with a small dish if you want to run pump gas.
