New to the forum
Hello there.

I joined not long ago in my search for info. I recently came into ownership of a truck that has been in our family since it was new. My dad purchased it brand new in 1987 and gave it to my grandfather in 91. He has owned it ever since and now that he is no longer able to drive it, he has handed it back over to me.

It is a 1987 GMC with 42k original miles. I am going to keep it stock for the most part and just focus on getting it back into shape. It is showing some neglect from sitting, my grandfather has only driven it a couple times in the last 2-3 years.

It is in desperate need of tires as the Generals that are on it are original and dry rotted pretty bad. I was going to replace them with 31's but am now thinking about either stock suspension and 32's or possibly adding a 4 inch lift and 33's.

I was hoping some of you could post shots of yours with these tire sizes so could get an idea of what she would look like.

I appreciate any advise you may have.

Here is a pic of the old girl.

I wouldn't change a thing or lift it. I like to keep things simple and that usually ends up being unique. One sweet truck!

BFG radial tires and maybe new shocks (if worn out) for a better ride. It may be a 4x4 but it's unmolested so it's great for a cruiser. As is, it's .

if you're looking to add bigger tires, i would seriously consider regearing to too. its probably got 2.73 gears in it, which will be terrible on the trans if installing 33s.

According to the RPO numbers on the glove box, I have 3.08s. If I go to 33's do you think that will be too much on those gears? I have about decided to just keep it all stock but I really like the look of these trucks sitting a little higher.

Nice truck man, it looks really clean. I'm not a fan of lifts, but I think it'll look pretty good with one.

BTW what part of knoxvegas you in?

My wallet helped make the decision. I decided to keep it stock and just dropped it off for some new 31x10.50 BFGs. I will post a couple pics when I get them on.

I work and live in west knox.

on stock 29" tires, that's not enough gear. that is where the weak reputation for the 700R4 comes from, GM grossly undergearing them, causing them to fail prematurely. with the 31" tires that you're having put on, a set of 3.73 gears would improve the life of the drivetrain, and possibly pick up some milage too.

Very nice. You should see my 87 Sierra for some real signs of neglect... I would keep it how it is aside from some new tires.

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

Here is a shot with the new tires. 31x10.50 BFG All Terrains.

Now I need to fix the air, replace the rusted out swiss cheese exhaust, replace the old crackling speakers, new shocks and linex the bed.

I love those tires, i have had numerious sets on my trucks over the years. They are good for offroading part time, and last pretty long on the road too, the key is to rotate them.

I agree, BFG AT's are pretty much about the only tire I have run on any of my trucks. Rotating is the key to long life. They have always been a very good all around truck tire.
