Re: Chevy Army Truck
i've seen guys that claimed to get up to 25mpg out of those things, 4.56 gears and all.
6 Pack knows his way around the 6.2 pretty well IIRC. i think he once told me max fuel economy on those things is right at 1800 RPMs.

Re: Chevy Army Truck
You need a cruise rpm of 1800-1900 to pull those kinda numbers out the 6.2. My '83 has recorded a highway best of 26 mpg.
The M1008 (1028 etc) has a practical top speed of 55 mph where it's screaming at 2900 rpm. You could squeak 60 out of it if you could stand to listen to it rev like that. At those rpm's you're lucky to pull down 14-15 mpg. My '81 Jimmy has the diff's out of an M1008, and a 6.2 diesel. When I was driving it regularly it had the SM 465, and cruise rpm at 65 mph was about 2550 rpm (on 39.5" tires). My freeway economy was 16.5 mpg, and about 15 in town. Second best thing for that M1028 would be 4" of lift and some 37's minimum. Still wouldn't be great on fuel, but at least you could drive at 65 mph. The best thing for that truck would be overdrive... The Jimmy's drivetrain and stuff is getting swapped into my '87 6 pack. 6.2, NV4500, dual T-cases, 4.56's and 37" MT's. cruise rpm on the highway will be about 1950 rpm. I should see 22 mpg or better. Rene Last edited by 6 Pack : 06-10-2008 at 11:51 PM. |

Re: Chevy Army Truck
Those old military trucks are tough. A friend of mine has an 84 with the 6.2 in it and its a strong motor. Its not a military truck. I don't know what kind of mpg he gets but the thing is pretty fast.

I wouldn't say fast either, but with the 4.56's they are comparable with a stock to mild small block of the same vintage. Difference is they pull harder off idle, but lose steam at the top end so the 'feel' is different. A lot of the civi models were slow by any definition, due to brutal gearing. You could often find 2.73's or 3.08's and overdrive together...and that kill's any get up and go. My '83 has 3.42's and it's decent, but only because it only has 235/75's on it. Even so some 3.73's or 4.10's would wake it up a lot IMO. Rene |

Re: Chevy Army Truck
Rear would be a 14 bolt, not a D80 unless someone swapped it in (which wouldn't make any sense...)
