Re: Bought a truck for my brother
Well...some newer Ford and I think Dodge D60 fronts had balljoints (and unit bearings and central disconnect). I would agree that the one pictured is a D44 though, and definitely of the Ford variety. Balljoints, drivers side drop, radius arms and coils...it screams older SFA 1/2 ton Ford to me.

See the perch cast into the side of the pumkin and the single U-bolt? That is a classic identifier for a D60 front. Also note this front diff has kingpins instead of balljoints.

Re: Bought a truck for my brother
thanks for the clarification! :) I may be on the search for one, but maybe for now I'll just throw the 14 bolt SF rearend on there when I upgrade to a lift kit. Would it be of any benefit to throw the 3/4 ton 10 bolt on there if the gearing is the same (4.10's) than my current 1/2 ton 10 bolt other than the 8 lug's and bigger breaks of course....

Re: Bought a truck for my brother
Well, the brakes are only sort of bigger. It's the rotor diameter that's a little bit bigger, the calipers themselves are same-same.

I'd do it only because it allows you to carry one spare tire, rather than have two different bolt patterns on the truck...and it's not a hard swap at all.

BTW, diggin both trucks.

Re: Bought a truck for my brother
Thanks, and I will do it just for that reason. I am going to have the axles off anyways for the lift, so might as well throw the 3/4 ton ones on there.

I guess if I can swap from auto to manual I can probably swap axles too! :)

Re: Bought a truck for my brother
Yep...if you can fog a mirror you can swap axles.

Just make sure the weight of the truck is on the springs and diff before torquing the U-bolts.

Re: Bought a truck for my brother
on your 10-bolt, you can just swap to 8-lug outers, no reason to swap the entire axle...

Re: Bought a truck for my brother
I believe the gearing is the same, but of course I will pull the diff covers and check for sure. I am pretty sure my rear axle is 4.10's, and the donor truck has 4.10's all around.

Re: Bought a truck for my brother
It is a nice truck, and for 500 bucks we couldn't pass it up. He needed a truck cause he just totaled his ford, and he is fighting with the insurance company for the payoff, so I bought it for him and he is going to pay me back as soon as it all falls through. The interior isn't in that great of shape, and the power windows don't work, but one of these weekends Im going to pull the doors off my donor truck that has manual windows and bring them to him to convert his truck to manual windows.

Has anyone converted power windows to manual windows>???? how much of a job is it??

Ive done it to a 94 Camaro Z28 (tired of replacing power window motors)and it wasn't hard at all.

almost as easy just to swap the entire axle if the 3/4 ton axle is in good condition.

Re: Bought a truck for my brother
Power to manual is easy. Swap doors...job done. lol

If you're talking swapping the guts it's obviously a bit more work, and getting all the crap out from inside the doors ain't my idea of fun.

Re: Bought a truck for my brother
Id like to keep the doors on his truck cause they are rust free, my donor trucks doors are also rust free, but are dented and don't look as good. Ill drop the doors off with him and let him deal with it! lol.... I will prob stay and help him, and two people doing it is faster than just one.

Re: Bought a truck for my brother
I probably will just swap axles since I will be doing a lift anyways, and will have the axles out.
