Can someone identify these for me?
I'm not sure what these two components are for. The one in the red box has a rod that extends down to where the manifold outlet is. The one in the blue box is just sitting on top of the intake manifold. They both have vacuum lines running to them. The picture is taken from the passenger side fender. I would like to learn about my engine so any help would be appreciated!

Also, the studs on the passenger side manifold are broken off. I assume the best remedy for this is to just get a new manifold. Any suggestions on where to pick one up? Do I need to get anything in particular?
thanks in advance for the help!

It would help to know what year.

It looks a lot like all the emissions crap, but I could be wrong.

Re: Can someone identify these for me?
i belive red goes to you heat riser on the exhaust manifold, its an exhaust restrictor so the engine warms up quicker they usualy dont work right ang get wired open.
as for the studs which manifold exhaust or intake ? and either way if they are studs then they are going to be stuck in your head. you are more than likely going to need a stud extractor and a torch.

the red box is the heat riser actuator, the blue is the EGR valve.

exhaust manifold outlets, common problem. pull them and replace them.

Re: Can someone identify these for me?
Hey guys, thanks for all the replies.
Chevysnbuicks: The truck is a 79, but the decal on the valve cover says GoodWrench350 so I'm thinking it is a crate engine.

As for the heat riser, could I just take it off without it messing something else up?

The manifold studs are on the exhaust on the passenger side. And they are the studs that connect to the y-pipe, NOT the ones going into the head. There are two studs which are rusted off to the point where there is nothing sticking out. They are flush with the surface of the exhaust manifold. If that doesn't make sense, I can try to make a drawing of it.

Re: Can someone identify these for me?
makes perfect sense. take it to an exhaust shop, they'll know what to do with it. probably require welding a bolt to the remaining part of the stud and backing it out.

Re: Can someone identify these for me?
How about the heat riser? Is it independent and I could just take it off the engine?

I believe it is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation - it allows some of the exhaust gas to recycle back into the cylinders.

correct, it allows for the unburned fuel still in the exhaust to be reburned improving mileage, and to help keep combustion temps even.

Re: Can someone identify these for me?
x2...egr and heat riser. You can take the heat riser off but you might experience some hesitation when it is cold because the motor will take longer to warm up. Here in Tx. we wire them open or take them off. The egr you gotta have for emissions if they give your car a colonoscopy. lmao.

i need a sig something bad.

IIRC Pgh is pretty tough with emissions.

Re: Can someone identify these for me?
anyone know the mileage cutoff for being emission exempt? I don't do too much driving so I might not have to worry about it.

Kansas city doesnt do emissions thank god. they just do a visual inspection of emission equipment. and if you dont have it then you find a more lienient shop to go to..

Re: Can someone identify these for me?
hmmm I thought if a vehicle is driven under a certain amount of miles in a year then it could be emissions exempt. Anyone else hear of this?
