Transfer case, which one?
OK, Im getting this 84 4x4 Silverado and it had the 305 motor, with 700r4 tranny , now i havent seen where it says what transfer case it had, but the guy said it had a 208. None of that stuff is there now, so i need to replace it.
oh, supposedly 308 gears
Now, i know i want to go with a cheap 350 for now until i can piece together a 5.3 or 6.0 and i will probably use a 700r4 with the new motor, my question is what transfer case should i get for the combo im using? Will a 208 handle the 350 motor?
Not looking to rock climb or anything, more of a daily driver with a few mud trips a year.... thanks, Remy

Re: Transfer case, which one?
it should be a np208 and a np208 is all aluminum and yes it will hold up to a 350 cause thats what was in my k5 a 350 700r4 and a np208

Re: Transfer case, which one?
208s are very strong transfer cases actually, even though they are chain driven. The case is the biggest weak point, but only if your rock crawling. Great low range.

Re: Transfer case, which one?
Thank you both tons, Ive been searching on Craigslist to piece this thing together, and i wanted to make sure that i was getting the right one.
Is there one better since i dont have one at all right now? Im gonna have to get both drive shafts too so ive got the option right now. I just dont want it to come into the cab through the same hole, dont want to start hackin the floor up....the cab is decent. Thanks, Remy

Re: Transfer case, which one?
They all come through the same hole it's just a matter of the linkage. A 205 is the best option but for what you need not necessary to spend the extra money.

The 205 was in the 3/4 and 1 tons? Im sorry, but as far as transfer cases go, ive never even looked at a difference in my 96, and 2001 that ive owned....Is the 205 just a more heavy duty bullet proof type?
Oh and will the 205 work with a 700r4?

Re: Transfer case, which one?
205's came in the 1 tons only from 81-up (stock anyway). To mate a 205 to a 700, you'll need a new output shaft for the tranny, new TC adapter, and will most likely have to modify the driveshafts.

it would be much easier and cheaper to find the proper 27 spline TH350 input for the transfer case, but you'll still have to come up with an adapter. if you're replacing the output shaft on a 700R4, you're tearing the entire trans down to nothing... its out of the truck, torn apart on the bench, NOT rebuilding it would be foolish at that point, which is more money.

What year is your k5? I wonder what my 1988 k5 has under it.

Re: Transfer case, which one?
Could be a 241. Not sure when they switched. Basically the same case, guess oiling improvments and I thought low range was a touch lower, but not sure.

Re: Transfer case, which one?
I would upgrade to a th350 or th400 with a np205 when you get some side cash. 208 is a weak case.

Re: Transfer case, which one?
How do you figure that? It has a weaker case being aluminum but unless your dropping it on rocks why would it matter?

Re: Transfer case, which one?
My 84' K5 build currently has a 700r4 with an np208, recently purchased a mild 350 to drop in.

Re: Transfer case, which one?
i've broken a 208 chain before but i was rock crawling with a heavy skinny pedal at the time.
208 is a good t-case, add a skid plate if your afraid of hitting it on rocks but otherwise you should be fine. breaking the chain or other internals is not very common, and unless your real hard on the truck it probably wont happen.

Re: Transfer case, which one?
Yeah, Ill be good to it, not into that rock climbing. Deep mud, maybe 3-4 times a year. I got the 208 transfer case with a 700r4 and yanked a 350 out of my project 72 NOVA. Now just looking for the motor brackets that no one seems to make anymore.....We used to call them Motor mounts, and the mount that was attached to the frame was the engine mount....but parts places dont call them that anymore....it is just a "bracket"......cant figure that one out....maybe the parts people are just too young now a days!!
on a side note, I saw a 205 where I got my 208, they did say that they dont sell them cause the originals dont break......
