Finally got some American Steel
After years of wanting for something that was always out of reach.
Living in West Oz whoever has the Steel tend not to let it go...
Anyhoo, I scored a Chev Custom Deluxe of which I have been led to believe is a C20, 1978 on the rego.
Now here is the thing, I am not sure !!!
Because the Plates that I have found and the numbers have not lead me anywhere. The only number that worked was the engine No: (told me it was a 292ci)
If I throw some numbers out there I hope someone could tell me exactly what baby Im caring for...
These plates were on the left-hand door pillar.
C20903-591418, Body Id Plate with the following : Model Chev C Cab, Body 593321 etc...and a General Motors Holden Plate,

Re: Finally got some American Steel
You came to the right place. I'm sure someone can help to decode the Pre-81 VIN here.
Congrats on the truck, and welcome to FSC!

Re: Finally got some American Steel
8ct237J59332
While somewhat reminiscent of a standard pre-standard Chevy VIN, I don't know what the hell it is. If decoded as a normal GM vin, it says
8-wtf. no idea. Maybe Holden or something. C or T would signify chev or gmc
c-2 wheel drive
t-292ci six
2-20 series 3/4 ton
3- chassis/cab (no bed from factory)
7- 1977 model year
J- Janesville WI plant
59332- sequence number.
But this could be totally wrong as who knows what the hells happens down is Oz.

Re: Finally got some American Steel
You are absolutely 100% correct when you say what happens down here is a little weird and only 99% correct on the vin lol
The 8 means "GM Overseas"

Re: Finally got some American Steel
So I slammed a Holley 350 on and She is definately a sweet ride and an excellent note...
She was owned by some old dude and his missus... She was used as a pilot vehicle for oversized jobs and never went above 35mph Motor was reconditioned 5years ago...
Bargain !

Re: Finally got some American Steel
Sorry still havent got the hang of this. Please put in front of last post ok.
$500 paid licenced and running, been rustproofed since new so no rust in chassis anywhere, needed waterpump, fuelpump, extractors and a 350 Holley.
It is a Fleetside with Fiberglass canopy...I think..
Youll see when I manage to post pics cya

Re: Finally got some American Steel
I thought I might actually put the VIN in...
8 = GMOverseas, C = Conventional Cab 106",
T = 292ci Inline Six 1bbl, 2 = 3/4 Ton
3 = Chassis Cab, 7 = 1977, J = Janesville
Remaining No's Assembly line

Oh geez, and I though I got it good with my bumper built of 2" round and square tubing with a spare wheel on it... now I'll have to break out the welder again!
What I find a bit odd tho is that your VIN decodes as cab-chassis truck, yet you have a regular pickup truck bed...

Re: Finally got some American Steel
That style of bumper seems quite common down there. I've seen pics of quite a few vehicles with them. Otherwise you can end up with a roo lodged in your grill. ;)

Rule #1 of old trucks: Take the VIN with a grain of salt, as there is a good chance that the truck has been modified to fit a different purpose than it was originally intended for, or the VIN was just wrong from the beginning. Same goes for anything on the title or registration.

Re: Finally got some American Steel
I wonder if it was ordered cab and chassis for shipping reasons it seems like you could piggy back a cab and chassis and then just stack the beds on top of each other just a thought.
