Nope it was at the sears here in Lima, OH. Other than the color it was identical, I want to say it was gray but I can't remember for sure.

Re: Blacked out grill on 73-87?
Yeah, i'm fully aware i was not born yet. However i know for a fact it was unloaded off the transporter with a black grille. My dad was there. Now him and I just assumed it was factory but i guess not....
Now, it seriously has me wondering why it came with a black grille, there is also a couple other 87s in my town with that same grille.

Maybe its a Canadian thing? It wouldn't be the first time we got something a little different than those in the states....

it would however be the first time that anyone got anything different than the GM catalogs. someone sprayed that grille black and because it never was offered as a factory color, you cannot find them aftermarket. painting them black is actually very common, i had an 82 with a grille blacked out exactly like your dad's.

It could have been ordered by a customer to have the black grill and the deal at the dealership feel through before delivery was taken. Or, could have been damaged while on the transporter and the dealership just put a new grill on it without painting it. Or maybe your dad got lucky and got one that slipped past Q/C without being noticed. I doubt the last one the second one sounds plausible and it is far fetched that if someone would order a custom ordered truck it would only have a grill change and nothing else.

other than the fact that GM did not offer a black grille... no, none of your stories sound that far fetched. if the parts dont exist, the parts dont exist. period. 81+ grilles are argent silver.

the bodystyles dont match up at all, and on a show truck, it looks horrible. i've seen several trucks try to pull it off failing miserably.
your truck appears to be built for use and abuse. at which point, aesthetics arent first priority. i'd rock it.

They work pretty well on the '67-'72 bodystyle trucks, but not so much on the '73-'87s.

Re: Blacked out grill on 73-87?
Ill just take it through a 3 foot mud hole in 2wd hammer it and then in reverse, then ram it through at about 6,000 in 4 hi and then it will be all brown and chunky....then it will all match.......lol. The only reason it was changed was the old bed was shot and this one was almost free, that you cant pass up. Anyway sorry to jam up the thread....

and i'd say his truck is clearly NOT a 73-87 like we were talking about.
the 67-72s lower radius is almost identical, and the upper body line nearly matches with the pinch in the 67-72 body.

What kills it for me on the 67-72s is the round wheel wells on the front and the squarer opening of the obs beds. Ya the body lines match better but that bugs the chit out of me.
